Willful misunderstanding of the concept is willful.

Idk, I'll be the first to admit that San Jose is not the most interesting city for its size...but to say that there's more culture/options in Livermore or Walnut Creek is a pretty big stretch.

I would say the bigger question is are you sure your debt will remain the same? With currently no debt and just renting (no need for a garage or pet rent) you could be comfortable on that, especially in the east bay, but you could probably find something on the peninsula or south bay as well if you look around.

Start adding in a car payment, or CC debt due to major car repairs, or a student loan that you will need to start making payments on, etc, and that money is going to get really tight, really fast. Do you see yourself remaining happy with that living situation?

I lived there in that pay range, but had a garage requirement and I've got some debts (less than many, but more than none) and adding in a car payment when my old truck died made money extremely tight. I HAD to have roommates and couldn't afford what I needed in a house (access to some private garage space and allow 2 cats) on my own. Part time jobs helped, but basically were my only source of "fun" money.

Aren't you the guy who races motorcycles and just moved to the Metroplex area? How's that going for you?

Guy? No. Gal, yes

It's - okay - here. Good for the racing. Living situation is a million times better for about the same cost. Plenty I miss about CA, but I knew I would (hill/mountains/oceans/etc, weather, my "circle"...), but the move is doing what I needed it to - make improvements in the racing, make that more attainable, improve my living situation, and free up some money to get in a better place financially. I don't see myself as a permanent resident here by any stretch, but for a couple/few years it will serve a purpose.
