Please look at the picture(s) I posted. It seems to be the earliest picture of the Chevrolet Motor Plant 1916 Oakland Ca.

Really fascinating pictures of Oakland in the earier times. I am amazed at how beautiful Oakland was before all of the development. Thanks for these awesome pictures.

i lived in Oakland late 40s early 50s, almost next to mills college. one early sunday morning in the early 50s i was wandering around mills college horse stable, to my surprise i saw Hopalong cassidy unloading his horse trailer, being only 10 years old my teeth about fell out , he looked at me and said, just don't stand there start unloading the trailer, by that time my knees were so weak i could hardley stand, one of the things that i remember was trying to lift his saddle, it felt like it weight 500 pounds with all of the silver and other fancy stuff on it. i tried to pull the horses hairs off of the saddle to show the kids at school and tell them it was from Hopalongs horse ,but they didn't beleve me, the horse stable is no longer there- HY 580 took its place.
devils punch bowl, the sulfur mines, all the way down to leona quarry was our play ground

Of course it was! But it's not something the public had a say in, as you probably know. The oil and auto industries bought it and removed it. And replaced it with buses that still run the exact same routes to SF. Then Guess Who had to foot the bill to build BART, to supplement the bus services--Joe and Jane Taxpayer.

The apt. block in the 2nd photo is probably gone now? That's some nice traditional architecture. It would be a shame to lose that. There's a building like that in Seattle's University District that retains its original look (smaller, though), and is a hotel above the shops.

In photo #4, notice the sign on the corner advertising a "Physical Culture Studio". Is that what they used to call a gym? lol

There was a business called Clestia's Beauty Shop at 3528 Hopkins Avenue, Oakland California in the 1930's til 1943. Do you have any information?

That's an awesome story! In the early 50's my mom took my brother and I to meet Hopalong Cassidy at the Oakland Capwell's store. She bought my brother official Hopalong chaps and I got a silkscreened scarf with his picture along with his horse "Topper". I still have that scarf somewhere around here, it's badly faded because I wore it every chance I got until I was 11 or 12. I was born in 46 and I think I was 6 or 7 when we went to see him which would make it around the same time you saw him, right?

"Capwell's". Boy, that's a name I haven't heard for a very long time! From what I heard from older generations, it was like Macy's is today; a place everyone went, including Berkeley residents, for basic household goods.
