From what people have told me I can easily take a taxi to nob hill/russian hill from there for about $10 or take muni for about $2 and san fran is so small it really doesn't matter where I live but my commuting is the key factor in terms of location. So my next question is...anyone have any experience with apts in soma? Any one in particular I should avoid or any I should consider? thanks!!
SOMA is an okay choice, but living near the BART stations there isn't desirable.

I'm also not sure why you mentioned the cab ride to Nob Hill/Russian Hill. No one really goes out in those neighborhoods anyways. Your best bet for club type places is SOMA. Best dive bars are in the mission. Chad and Trixie bars are in the Marina (think Lincoln Park/Wrigleyville in Chicago).

In terms of apartments, I think you're misunderstanding the situation a bit. There are very few apartment complexes in San Francisco. The overwhelming majority of apartments are in buildings with 2-10 units. The only apartment complexes I know of are very overpriced. Craigslist is your best bet. Finding a share online is the way to go.

Also, you may want to drop "San Fran". Dead giveaway for a newbie or tourist. Just trying to be helpful.

Not very safe at all. Sixth and Mission is honestly one of the worst intersections in the city to live at.
