18 Montclair,

Thanks for the update on the towers that will change Oakland's skyline.

+4

If there is any more, feel free to post.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1640 Broadway,

I like this buiding design. As far as it being the tallest buiding in Oakland, I question that.

In the early articles, it speaks of being the tallest building in Oakland.

However, in the OCPC case file, it says the building's height is 375 ft. It also says it's 389 ft.

Being 375-389 ft. would make 1640 Broadway the 3rd tallest building in Oakland.

Either way, I like it and hopes it gets built in that parking lot. It would add much needed height to that section of downtown, increasing the connection between uptown and downtown.

As for the Oaksterdam mural. Collateral damage?

Swig Co Kaiser Center I & II,

Adds the much needed height and density to the area.

A 573 ft. tower and a 469 ft. tower will only push Oakland up the skyline latter. It would further light up the sky and increase foot traffic for the area.

A New Home for Oaktown Jazz Workshops

"The former Tony Roma's restaurant, the spacious spot at 55 Washington in Jack London Square has been granted by the Port of Oakland to local jazz trumpeter Khalil Shaheed to house Oaktown Jazz Workshops (OJW)"

"Now with a permanent place of residence, OJW can expand into summer programming and performances as well as practice sessions without the interruptions typical of after-school hours"

"Kids usually come to OJW after they have begun learning an instrument in school and are ready for a more intensive way to practice and improve."

Oakland breaks ground for monument to world’s great humanitarians

In three months, the largest bronze monument in the western United Sates will be standing in downtown Oakland

The monument, which will be located at Henry J. Kaiser Memorial Park, is called "Remember Them: Champions For Humanity," and will feature the sculptures of 25 humanitarians from around the world

The four-piece statue, weighing more than 50,000 pounds, will stand 52 feet wide by 21 feet tall, taking up 1,000 square feet of the park's southwest corner

Mario Chiodo, the lead sculptor of the monument and an Oakland native, said he started designing the project after the September 11 terrorist attacks ten years ago to promote peace and diversity. Chiodo said he has chosen these 25 historical figures because they are “examples of people who did extraordinary things under the most difficult circumstances” and represent “common threads of courage and perseverance.”

The $9 million project is funded by the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce Foundation and its major donors include Kaiser Permanente, AT&T and Bank of America

Sungevity is adding 200-300 new jobs.
Quote:
The solar installer recently expanded its footprint at 66 Franklin in Jack London Square in Oakland and will now occupy close to 31,000 square feet. In early 2010, Sungevity moved into about 20,000 square feet in the building with 50 employees. The company has since boosted employment to 215 and aims to have up to 500 on its payroll by the end of the year.

This is very promising. Demonstrates confidence by the developer in the viability of Downtown Oakland as place for further residential development.

I like its visibility from NB880 a lot. Its very prominent and not far at all from Victory Court. The crown on the taller tower is a little strange but over time, both buildings could become iconic. LOL.

Oakland highrise towers seek OK

July 15, 2011 San Francisco Business Times
Developer Balco Properties is close to securing entitlements on a 380-unit tower duo — on track to be the first residential highrises entitled in Oakland since the boom years.

The project, at 325 7th St., is designed to include two towers of 27 and 20 stories joined by a four-story platform and sharing 399 parking spaces and 9,100 square feet of ground-floor retail. Balco began planning the project in 2006 under much different market conditions, said Mark McClure, a partner California Capital Group who has consulted on the project.

Update on the BART-Oakland Airport Connector rail project:
Quote:
[LEFT]Currently, the automated-rail project, which will connect passengers at BART’s Coliseum Station to the Oakland International Airport, is projected to cost $480.8 million. No small penny for a 3.2-mile project that will replace existing service, but its actually about $3.3 million less than the $484.1 million budgeted for the OAC when it was approved last year.

Seriously? They really think that coming $3M "under" budget on a $480M project is progress. Especially considering it has barely started? *rolls eyes* (I hate this project, I think it is a waste of funds.)
