I really suggest you visit before you move. San Jose is more like LA than San Francisco, in that it's sprawling suburbia. I've lived in both cities.

Rents are high in both places. It may be that they were particularly bad this summer, when the tech companies hired a bunch of people out of college and they were all looking for rentals at once. Several people reported really large rent hikes when their leases were up.

If you want to get an idea of just how wonderful housing here is, I suggest you start reading Burbed. I tell you, any city can have crappy housing, but only Silicon Valley can have crappy housing for over half a million dollars. We have lots of pictures to prove it.
