Because one prefers SF over SJ. (The threads about this in C-D are legion)

When I was a single guy, I would've taken SF over SJ any day (I actually lived up in the city for 4 years). I thought it was much better for the dating scene. I also enjoyed all the trendy places to hang out. However, when I got into my 30s, got married and ended up working in the valley, all the things I really enjoyed about the city became more of a hassle. It all depends upon what stage of life you are in.

I sure would.
I asked you "why San Jose" because it was just my sense that you haven't been to the area before?
I haven't read all of your posts so perhaps you answered that question.
I am not a fan of San Jose but that's just me.
It's a sprawling western city but without what i want in city living.
San Francisco on the other hand is a city city.
It will be much more familiar to you as an easterner.
People used to say that San Francisco is the Boston of the west.
I don't think that's so true but i can understand that perception.
To me, it's the most beautiful city in the country.
If you haven't been to California, i suggest that you take a trip out here and have a direct experience of San Francisco and San Jose and see how you feel about the two places.
If you can afford to live in S.F., you may prefer it if you want city living.

Thanks, I began to realize that maybe San Fran was better. Also I haven't visited the area yet.

The only "city" in the bay area is SF. You will be so disappointed with SJ if city life is what you are looking for.

I say if you have the money, go for SF. If you work in the valley, there are many nice towns in the peninsula that puts you closer to SF.

SJ is a sprawling suburb. SF is a dense city. However, day to day living is easier in a suburb than a city. And SJ is still a lot cheaper than SF. Come visit and check them out -- they are like different worlds.

Yes, if my job wasn't 40 miles from San Francisco.

Agreed, except that San Jose is not that much cheaper than SF. Your average decent San Jose 1 bedroom is probably $1,700 per month now, where in SF it's more like $2,000, but you can probably lose the car in SF.

might not be that much cheaper but one thing to realize is that the quality of the apartments is substantially poorer in San Francisco than San Jose, for the same or similar money. In San Francisco unless you shell out big bucks for new or renovated place, you're getting a dilapidated eyesore compared to what you get in Silicon Valley.

Don't get me wrong. I like San Francisco and wouldn't mind living there, but the quality of the apartments is not good.
