It'll help, for sure. But it's more lanes at the same density, so it doesn't allow much capacity for future population growth. Fairly quickly we'll reach a new traffic equilibrium.

What the area really needs from 85 is a bus rapid transit lane with tolled access for corporate buses. Knock the capacity up an order of magnitude.

And they're building EVEN MORE shopping on the northeast side of the 85/Almaden junction..

I have a friend in Santa Clara so during rush hour so I use Camden/San Thomas which takes me directly to El Camino. It doesn't seem to be as frenzied as Hwys. 85 or 87 northbound/southbound, especially when the lights are timed.

Camden has a really bad pinch point at Hwy 17. I've waited 20 minutes to get through that one light (going through, not to the freeway).

The whole segment between Bascom and 17 can be a quagmire. Still, San Tomas/Camden is my preferred route for the evening commute from Santa Clara if I leave work before about 8pm. Much better than 101S to 87S, which used to be tolerable after about 7pm but is now congested well past 8.

It's more than just the Bass Pro Shop. The Bass Pro Shop is huge at 150k square feet, but they've got 350k square feet of retail planned for that site. I can't even imagine how bad the traffic will be.

Oh help you all...that's going to be hellish.

This image from the developer's site pretty much sums up why the area is so busy:

Meh. They said the same thing when Best Buy and then Walmart went in. And honestly, it's fine. I go through that stretch of Almaden at all times of the day, and it's never really bad. The lights are really timed to perfection. I don't think this new shopping center is going to have that much of an impact. On the contrary, I'm looking forward to seeing what else goes in there besides Bass Pro Shop. I didn't think there were that many bass players in town.

Kdog, Bas Pro Shop is for the "fishing" type of bass, and basically all types of gears for outdoor activities
