Are chickens allowed in any areas in North Port other than the Estates?

No, not that I am aware of. You can contact the City of North Port zoning department to see what the ordinances are.

I believe I just heard something about chickens on the news. I believe they denied permission to some residents that wanted to have them. Don't know why you'd want them myself. Ill get my eggs at Publixs.

Funny, this reminds me of my last house up north. We lived in a newer neighborhood with acre+ lots. Backing up to our neighborhood & behind my house lived an old farmer with several acres of land & he had turkeys, chickens & a rooster that went off every freakin day at 5am (try having that alarm clock for 6 years straight ) I grew up in the country but that rooster drove me insane!!

Anyway, here is a blog that might have some info for you-

From my understand they are considered livestock and your property has to be zoned agricultural or farm use to have them.

Also, they'd probably **** your neighbors off.

We used to live in the Cayman Islands, and like most of the Caribbean, there are half-wild chickens that far outnumber people on the island.

They are everywhere, and provided us with endless entertainment. They also scratch around and eat the bugs and sleeping mosquitos out of your yard, which is a huge help.

I miss those chickens more than any single person back in West Bay, I think.

We just got back from the CI You're right, those chickens are funny. Gas station parking lot- chickens, grocery store parking lot- chickens, picnic area- chickens. Went shopping in Camana Bay & you guessed it- chickens. We loved it, LOL!

Here is an older article from last fall about chickens in Sarasota County - seems they are either allowed in the most urban areas or the most agricultural areas for now, but CLUCK organization is trying to change that:

Jono Miller: Why can't a chicken live in the suburbs? | HeraldTribune.com

Also, Manatee county is going to legalize having chickens. Frankly, most people don't even realize it when their neighbors have a couple of laying hens, they don't make much noise or much smell, far less than a dog or cat. One of my neighbors here in Whitfield has a few peacocks than actually run free. I love seeing them!

ETA: I considered getting a couple of hens, but really they are not cost effective, and depending where you live can be killed by other predators, like hawks, raccoons, foxes, etc. I researched it and also asked people about it and came to the conclusion that I rather buy them fresh from the farmstand.
