Hi,

I'm considering relocating to Florida and plan on covering my expenses from my savings account until I get settled with a job. I owned my own place for quite awhile, but have never rented before, and in doing some research online, it seems I might have a hard time finding a landlord who will be flexible with renting to someone who doesn't have a job right away. I'm also concerned with giving out personal information that may lead to identity theft (a credit and finance check is required, right?), as well as renting from someone who doesn't keep their mortgage payments up to date.

Am I just being paranoid? Anyone have any advice on how to protect myself while still reassuring potential landlords that I'm an honest person who will take care of their home and pay my rent on time every month?

I'm looking for a nice home with a pool in a safe area. Any specific locations in the greater Sarasota/Bradenton area I should focus on? I'll be driving down to Florida to look at some places and sign a lease soon.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Offer potential landlords several months rent up front and they might care less that you don't have a job. My daughter and son-in-law were in the same situation last week when looking for a rental home in Tennessee (no jobs yet, planning to live off savings until they find jobs). When they offered to write the property owner a check for 6 months rent up front, they had no problem finding a nice place.
