We are relocating to Sarasota FL this summer. Our target is Pine View magnet school for our kids, (1,3 and 5grades). Is there a preparation for an admission test you could recommend? Did you prepare your kids and how? Do the Pine View teachers have a strong academic background? Do they really give a deep knowledge to their students or they just give tons of homework?

You'll get mixed responses. Some very positive, others not so much.

I've heard it is a very stressful environment for kids.

My son went there. There is only an I.Q. test given by the school district or you can get it done privately at a psychiatrist. You cannot prepare for an I.Q. test.

It was a stressful environment - tons of homework - it was stressful for my son because even though he was "gifted" there were kids there that were even more "gifted" then him. He did enjoy being around kids more like him - kids that were on the smart side.

Just like any school - some teachers were good - some not so good. Many teachers had their Masters and some a PhD but that was also true in the "regular" schools around here -

That's what I've been told about gifted classes. They don't necessary teach more information, but the kids will always have more homework.

Thank you so much for your responses!!!

I am just wondering how Pine view differes from the "gifted and talented program" at the regular public schools. Also I am surprised that Pine View does not offer AP courses in high school comparing to the top rated magnet schools nationally.
What is a good neighborhood of single family houses with the best public school district in Sarasota County you would recommend? I really appreciate all of your responses.

Why do you want your children to attend PineView?
Are they “gifted”? It is possible to obtain a gifted score via a private psychologist (many parents have done it) but it is not really good for a child to be pressured to punch above his/her weight…

No school sports at PV

If a child wants a school sport vs club team, they try out at the school their address is zoned for
Awkward and time consuming

At PineView students in their age grade do academic material for grade ahead
So students who transfer in may have holes in their past academic background if they are jumped to next grade’s curricula
2nd grade does 3rd
3rd does 4th etc

I know someone at PineView who teaches AP European history and I am sure there are other AP classes
Just randomly choosing teachers I have found other AP courses so I think you are incorrect that there are no AP classes offered

Call the school
Monday is MLK so it’s closed

The area has magnet, charter, public, private, umbrella, FVLS, and homeschooling as far as choices for schooling. Florida offers parents an incredible amount of choices. It's not like up north where you go to the 1 public school you are forced to.

Your question is next to impossible to answer.

What type of schooling do you want for your child? Define that then ask around as to where to find what you are specifically looking for.

Pine View is an exceptional school with exceptional teachers and gifted students.
Juvenile delinquents, gangster kids, and kids of drug addict parents will not be found attending here.
