As an owner of multiple cats, perhaps I can help you with your questions.

There is a rather large number of stray and feral cats in our part of FL, and many of these felines carry diseases or illnesses that can easily be passed on to your cat if they were to come in contact. These include: FeLV, FIV, FIP, feline distemper or URI.

Cat owners also need to be on the alert for wildlife hazards such as venomous snakes (rattlesnakes & coral snakes are common). Other potential hazards are alligators (if you live on a lake or retention pond) and coyotes.

All cats in Manatee and Sarasota counties have to be licensed, have up to date rabies shots.

Sarasota county leash laws prohibit cats from roaming on the property of another or public areas such as sidewalks and streets. Manatee county ordinances state your cat must be on a leash no longer than 8 feet in length when it is off of the owner's property & must be under the direct control of the owner while on the cat owner's property.
That being said, some people still allow their cats to roam. But if you have neighbors that don't appreciate your cats stalking birds in their yards or walking on their cars, you might find yourself having to deal with the local animal control officer.

My cats, for all of the reasons above, are indoor cats. They do have a play area on the screened lanai to give them fresh air without actually being outdoors.

I hope your cats transition well to FL.

I agree w/ Sunshine. There are a lot of dangers out there and most cats will be perfectly happy inside a screened lanai/pool cage area. Do watch out for anoles, though, as they can easily fit under screen doors resulting in lost tails and/or bloody lizards. I definitely wouldn't let the cats stay out overnight, though, unless you have a more protected space for them so that something doesn't try and come through the screen. Our cats really enjoy their outside time and get let in/out throughout the day and evening hours and then we make everyone come inside before we go to bed. I'd also recommend putting up bird feeders if you can. We figure the cost of bird seed is well worth the entertainment provided by the Cat TV they offer in return. Best wishes on your upcoming move!
