I recently met up with an old friend that also grew up in Savannah and we had a good time digging up old names of places. Since then it's had me reminiscing about Savannah. As much as I was glad to leave (at the time) I have to say the place does hold an undeniable charm when I look back on it.

Anyway, I'm just hoping some of these old names might stir up a few fun conversations.

In no particular order

Bars/Clubs:
Dew-Drop-In (neighborhood bar on Largo)
The Finish Line
Texas South (on Indian St)
Jerry’s Lounge
Jim Collins
Emerald Lounge (Never was able to sneak in there)
Dugger’s (out on Hwy 17) - pretty rough place
Bullfrog Springer’s (later became Shucker’s)
Captain’s Lounge (a lot of people seemed to be afraid of the place but I always felt ok there)
Stonehenge (later became Downtown-something, and then something else)
The Plantation-something (on Abercorn close to Mall Blvd)
Double’s Lounge (hated that place)
Pinkie Master’s (and the much beloved bartender lady “Billie” who would sell us 6-packs after 3 o'clock)
Sam Bower’s (sp?)- Only went a couple of times, and did not stay long.

Misc:
Quarter Bag (arcade)
Stone Kingdom (head shop over by the gate to the Army base)
Starship Records
The Record Bar (inside the mall)
Mamie’s Kitchen (out on hwy 17) - good Brunswick stew and first place i ever had "battered" fries.
Love’s Seafood (by the bridge at King’s Ferry) - good fried catfish

Places to "hangout and party" at night:
The “second bridge” out on Skidaway Island
King’s Ferry
Bell’s Landing (high school)
The “Cliffs”
Bonaventure Cemetery (high school)

Do you still live in the area? Just curious ... a lot of the things you mention are long gone or changed dramatically. You really date yourself LOL!

PS -- What's "The Cliffs"?

The second bridge was awesome.

We used to go there around 2-3AM and go fishing. I was only 8-9 years old and my brother and his friends would go there and take me in the summer and fish. Only got stingrays though lol.

By "second bridge" do you mean the draw bridge that's being replaced now? That new one is awesome ... wonder of they'll keep the boat ramp / pier underneath?

It was Mammy's Kitchen out on Highway 17. I remember my dad taking me there when I was a kid. The giant fiberglass cow out front managed to move (wander?) down to Keller's Flea Market.

I remember one of my cousins getting busted at Stonehenge back in the day. From that point on, that place was only mentioned in hushed tones at my family's house! You'd think he'd been caught at the Showboat or something.

Nope, I left Savannah in the late 90's. I'm just now starting to really look back and miss it.

Funny enough, one of the things I miss most (or at least something I often think about) is... ready? Get this.... Carey Hilliard's! LOL.... I never imagined I would actually type those words. But, I swear I do miss it. There was better seafood (for sure) but Carey Hilliard's is the one that sticks in my mind. We ate there a lot because they stayed open late and we had one real close to the house.

"The Cliffs" was a secluded spot out on Skidaway Island. This was in the late 70's so the details are a bit foggy. But, as I recall... we'd take that road that leads up to the guard gate to The Landings but before you get to the gate you turn left and head out to where they had that aquarium for the young school kids. A short ways before the aquarium we'd turn right onto an unmarked dirt "road" (more like a trail). it cut through the trees there and led to an open field right by the water. There was a small drop off to the water which is why i think it got nicknamed "The Cliffs" (which is kind of silly).

Anyway, it was a teenager hangout mostly for parking. Most of the hard "partying" happened underneath the "second bridge". This was back when there was nothing there but the boat ramp. It would get quite crowded on weekends nights. The county cops would cruise through every now and then but would only really mess with us over stuff like a bonfire being too large or some such. I remember they later built a little store there close to underneath the bridge and the cops would cruise through more often and that did calm things down a bit and thin down the crowd.

LOL.... The Showboat!!!

Hadn't thought of that place in a long time. Remember... it was actually shaped like a boat?

I think it became a car lot or something.

Showboat? Wasn't that a strip club across the river?

I like Carey Hilliard's but only eat there occasionally; there's so many other fantastic restaurants in Savannah now. But it can't be beat for good old fashioned CHEAP fried seafood served up by big-haired waitresses in a totally Carol Brady decore! A Savannah classic (along with Johnny Harris and Crystal Beer Parlor, both of which still thrive. CBP especially is as good as ever.

Love's also continues to do quite well, though they've gone more upscale in recent years and I no longer go out that way ever. Too far, too expensive. I miss Pearl's Elegant Pelican! Remember how awesome that place was?! YUM!

You mentioned Pinkie Masters (still kicking), Double's (still open against all odds) and Captain's Lounge (which somebody told me has gone gay!). Everything else you listed is either closed or changed names, as far as I know.

As to the Skidaway stuff, are the "cliffs" you describe at Priests Landing? That remains a popular put-in spot for boaters and there's a private dry-dock marina (for Landings residents i think) there. That end of the island ramains largely undeveloped. I'm not evensure how much the Landings Co. owns or plans to develop in the future. Once the new bridge and Truman Parkway are complete, the demand for homes over there is gonna boom again.

ONE MORE THING: Did you guys hang out at any of the other boat ramps around town? Both Islands Expressway and Kings Ferry used to be notorious for late-night illicit activity of a certain persuasion IYKWIM. They completely rebuilt Kings Ferry a couple years ago and brought a stop to it, but drive past IX / President Street ramps at night and there's always cars lurking about. CREEPY!!

Carey Hilliard's, especially the one out on Waters is still the best. Those Onion Rings were to die for!!

Was the Emerald Lounge that topless strip joint on Barnard or Montgomery? If so.. we had a woman that had danced there when she was younger and better shaped...working in our insurance dept. One day, she told me that if she had had legs like mine, she would have been a millionare.

Now, I ask you, was that a compliment or not???!!

OH! Meant to add that the property out on US 17 / Coastal HWY where Mammies Kitchen used to be is now a luxury gated apartment community overlooking the marsh. They saved all the big oaks.

My how SAV continues to grow and change!
