I'm sorry PJMaddoxRox - I didn't mean to hijack this conversation with my own issues. Let's get back on track a bit.

Where, physically, do you think you'll be living?

There are some pretty good churches in all quadrants. Consumed Church in Richmond Hill, Relate Church in Pooler, just for starters...

NO apologies necessary!

I wish this hadn't happened to your son but I appreciate your sharing it here.

At the top of the list (today - we move in 2 years so who knows if this changes) is either Thunderbolt or neighborhoods like Oakdale or Berkshire Woods. Not interested in Pooler or Richmond Hill areas.

OH - you're REALLY planning out ahead.

Of those, Berkshire Woods is probably the quietest, Oakdale is probably the most convenient to shopping, and Thunderbolt is closest to Salt Life.

Does anybody have an opinion of Coastal Cathedral COG? They used to be on DeRenne but moved out to Berwick several years ago. I enjoyed watching them on TV back in the day.

Among Baptist churches in the city ...

-- First Baptist downtown is the oldest in Georgia and very liberal and "high church" (friends go there)
-- Bull Street Baptist downtown is moderate and seems to be growing again after several decades of struggling with white flight, etc. They have a big college ministry that is focused on SCAD students.
-- Bible Baptist Church and Southside Baptist are both very conservative.
-- Calvary Baptist Temple in Midtown (across from Memorial U Medical Center) has an interesting history. Like many of Savannah's churches, it was originally located in the Victorian District downtown and relocated to their present location in the 1960s as their white membership fled the inner city. At that time they also opened a private school (to oppose desegregation of the public schools). At one time; during the 1980s and 90s, they were one of the biggest churches in the state with several thousand weekly attendees and a reputation for being very conservative and active in local political matters. After a series of scandals and bad financial decisions, the church is a shell of its former self today. I believe they at one time even declared bankruptcy. They now have an African-American senior pastor and are striving to become "multicultural" (ironic given their history). Calvary Day School, which is separate from the church but occupies most of its campus and buildings, continues to thrive and has a good reputation academically.

We try to come down every 3 months or so to look around, tour neighborhoods and we started planning trips around opportunities to attend church.

Oakdale and Thunderbolt are higher up on the list than Berkshire!

First Baptist Church Savannah is located in the downtown historical district. They separated from the Southern Baptists and have a ideologically left leaving perspective. Bull Street Baptist Church is a large church also close to downtown. They are still affiliated with the Southern Baptist. There's another one on the East side that I can't remember details about.

I know a couple of folks that attend Coastal Cathedral. They are a solid Church of God. I attend Southside Assembly of God which is a very wonderful church. It's located where Savannah Christian used to be on Tibet Ave.

Another church on our list is Islands Christian Church.

Anyone have experiences there?
