Well it's a liberal city for a couple of obvious reasons:
1) 50 % Black
2) SCAD

This is probably also good for the OP to see.... Rancor among residents, politically speaking. I really hate it when Yankees think of the South as one homogeneous zone, politically. It's easy to paint with broad strokes when you're not from around here.

Consider that there is considerable diversity - even here, and no matter what you think or want.

I will just add that we Yankees get a culture shock when there is a 55% or so, black population. This doesn't mean we can't go with the flow, but only that it takes a few beats to get with the program. We are wide open to new experiences and outlooks.
As for me, there was 1 black girl in my high school in MA, so moving to Savannah was like moving to Mars. I submit that we Yankees are much more open to everyone, than you southerners are, without preconceived notions, or cultural baggage.

Ha! I'm actually from Pennsylvania. I went to college in Massachusetts. And as much as my fellow Yankees sometimes seem like they would like to disown me outright by their own "preconceived notions and cultural baggage," I can tell you that living in both Georgia and Pennsylvania for extended periods of my life, people pretty much suck in both places equally. Except Ohio... People suck worse there. :P

Besides, last time I checked, there were just about as many Black people in Philadelphia as there were White. The reason you probably had so few Black people in your high school was because Northern neighborhoods are far more segregated, by and large, and you never had forced desegregation and cross-city busing policies in Massachusetts.

One thing that almost always rings true for me regarding Yankees and Rebels is their shared propensity for believing they hold claim to some form of moral high ground. I guess it just helps folks sleep better at night, no matter what state they lay their heads down in.

All this is why I like Savannah. Also interestingly...up north Yankees are the Evil Empire. I don't think New Englanders would take kindly to that term. Hehe. What I like about southerners is they keep it real, they will tell you what they think, about almost anything, with politeness and joviality. On the same token it is sometimes nice northerners are a bit more reserved and less inquisitive about personal things, and live at a quicker pace. There is good in both, depending on time and place.

Getting in and out of Savannah is hard. I would look to a place with road access from all directions and No bridges. Population stats are telling. To me it is a dirty, smelly, hot buggy oppressive place.

Now like my folks who were from NC/VA used to tell me "DamnYankee" is one word. I can't WAIT to leave upstate NY and be away from wacky liberals who make me twitch. Plus I have seen a huge downward trend of not having faith here too and I stopped going to to my church because of being judge a "hick" by downstate LI'ers and Westchester NY cityidiots that moved here.

My parents could tell you off so politely that you would enjoy that trip. But they instilled that I should always be honest as it could never come back to haunt me.

I am counting down our days until we relocate. It'll be nice to get to know my neighbors and be part of a community again. Here, we've had people move onto this street I grew up on-I've been on it now for 50 years- and some I've yet to see leave their houses, let alone say hello to them. And my road only has 14 houses and is 800 ft long. Growing up, all the neighbors hosted summer block parties. Sigh.

When I first came to Savannah to start my new business I used to go there every day to use their computers. Great place to "get the feel " of Savannah. Recommend one go their to chill out a bit on an afternoon out of the sun or rain. You can find parking across the street surrounding that small park without a problem.
