Hi Everyone,

My family is moving early next year to either Savannah area or Jacksonville area.

To be honest I am terrified of two things, alligator encounters and school districts. I don't want to go private as my kids are in kindergarten and 1st, but I really want to make sure we end up in a good district.

Also how conservative is the area?

Thank you

Hi JanKoch,

Savannah, home of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, is a pretty conservative area in general, however the downtown and islands lean further left. It's much like most of the state. The more urban you get, the more liberal it leans.

We have two pretty good school districts here - South Effingham and Richmond Hill. We homeschool our kids, so I couldn't really give first hand experience.

Alligators are real. Probably worst in Jacksonville than in Savannah. We live on a tidal creek and a small 4-foot one likes to bath on our bank. We have a fence to keep the gator out and an electronic fence to keep the dogs in.

If you have any more specific questions, I'll try to help!

Thank you so much for the help!

I am a paralegal, so I like the more conservative vibe and love that SCOTUS Justice Thomas is from Savannah!

Jacksonville is far more conservative than Savannah. In fact, it's one of the most conservative metros in the nation. Baptists run Jacksonville.

Alligators are rarely a problem, and then only if you live on a body of water where they habitate. Gators are not like deer.

Yes, but as a youngster, Clarence Thomas spent a lot of time living in town, having spoken at times of his many hours spent in the Carnegie Library on Henry Street. A smart young man, no doubt. As for local politics, JanKoch, you might want to consider that Chatham County always goes blue in national elections, due in no small part to the legion of Democrat African Americans, who make no claim of fellowship with Justice Thomas, but who make up the majority of the city's population.

And then Clarence grew up to be a sexual harasser of women and tool for the rich, I would put forth. JanKoch Savannah is Charleston's liberal sister city I'd say.

Yeah, right. That was a complete sham. Anita Hill is an embarrassment to my gender.
You must find Bill Clinton's existence awfully inconvenient.
Sorry to be O/T, but l couldn't let that go.

huh? I don't know whether she is a liar but where there's smoke there's usually fire. Why do you assume I accept Bill's behavior? I don't. He's a sleazeball at best and predator at worst. He definitely took advantage of Monica and practically ruined her life. I can separate things. I liked some of his policies. The guy, notsomuch.
