Don't worry though, if you land here, you'll get into the groove. Just keep repeating...Slovannah, Slovannah...
Its probably just your opening sentence, when you offer your obvious solution, "We did it up north this way". That will do it every time.

Of course, I would feel the same way. Totally understandable.

Why in Sam Hill would I do something as stupid as that? Let me put this straight out there. Just because I grew up in NY, doesn't MEAN I was RAISED as a NY'er. I was raised by two southerners who were born in the 1920's and moved here to work for Texaco. Not all of us that come down act that way. Don't lump us all together. Raised by folks who grew up during the Depression gave me more appreciation on how to make do with what I got, than not got.

All I'd want is to roll up my sleeves and get my hands dirty working side by side with my neighbors to get things back to normal. I come prepared with a chain saw and work gloves. Good enough.

This is what we are trying to tell you. They don't want to hear it. They don't want input about how thing can be better. I have a volunteer job here, but everyone is from up north.

Southern man is just stuck in his old ways, but I'm open to any and all ideas that sound good no matter where you're from.

Really, I don't think I've ever heard anyone say "up north, we did it this way" ... that's just ignorance coming out. And I DON'T mean ignorance from the accused northerner. Beware of that.

Anyway, back to topic. Does anyone know how the islands are doing? Wilmington, Whitemarsh and Skidaway to be specific.

I guess the DamnYankees that come down there are more than likely from the NYC/Long Island/Westchester areas. They are uncouth and have little manners. We've been over run by them since 9/11. They always know how to do it better, why don't we do things they way they had it down state. Heck, next town over is now being tooted as "Brooklyn North". We are called "hicks" because we grew up here. Or inbreed. So yeah I get it.

I just want a place to call home. And be part of a community again that knows their neighbor. Do you how sad it is to live on the same road one grew up on and now being the last survivor so to speak and I know 2 neighbors out of 15? No one leaves their houses. No more neighborhood summer get togethers.

Now back to the area. What is everyone seeing in terms of damage? Coffee Bluff or Burnside Island areas?

Really, they just started letting folks return to Chatham co after 5pm yesterday, so there hasn't been much feedback yet. The newspaper hasn't been delivered either. My neighbor tried to come home to Pooler from Macon yesterday afternoon, but was turned away in Bllomingdale.

The overview of everywhere is that most of the damage was downed trees taking out power lines. We still have no power now for that reason.

Can't your realtor check on your house for you? Also, there is a GA Power website where you can check for outages.

I think that a announcement regarding barrier islands is expected today. It's up to the state, not local jurisdictions as to when we can return. Glynn County announced that residents could return over the weekend, then the state overrode the OK. Of course, residents had already begun to return and were stopped at the county line. Way to go, guys.
As far as the islands go, the big issue is the downed power lines as a safety problem for returning residents. They've got to deem that situation under control before they let us back. I have no interest in getting back until I have lights anyway.
My husband has to leave for a conference in Iceland tomorrow. He expected to be home before his trip and therefore packed no warm clothing. We had to hit REI and Macy's yesterday to pull together a winter wardrobe.

My daughter returned to the house in Savannah this morning. The house is ok and she has power and water. No trees came down on her street but on the next street a huge tree went over and through a house. Hilton Head is still a mess so she can't go to work the next few days as the hotel can't open yet.

I visited a couple of trailer parks just outside the city. Some of those homes were really hard hit... Like cut in two, smashed head on by a freight train. Not a pretty sight.
