Last year, I heard rumors of Costco building on President Street (between the Truman Parkway and the Publix near Islands Expressway).

What in the devil ever happened?

Mr. Homebody and I have to go to either Charleston, Jacksonville, or...gasp, Atlanta, to satisfy our Costco cravings.

Why isn't there a Costco in this area? Between Savannah, Effingham, Bryan, Liberty, and the Bluffton/Beaufort/HHI areas, you would think they'd have more than enough customers...

Does anybody know???

Given the current economic climate in the WORLD I think retail businesses are just trying to keep open the current stores they have now. Even discount stores like Sams - Walmart and Costco are scaling back new developments.

BTW, I think our local economies would be much better off if we buy local instead of sending our money to Arkansas or some other corporate giant. One of the reasons we are in the current predicament now - buying local has been lost.

Thanks for the conscientious response. However, I've tried "buying local" on many occasions, and cost and customer service were sorely lacking.

Costco is a tip top company. Costco is NOT Walmart; they actually pay their employees a living wage and have an extraordinary customer service policy.

Even IKEA won't open a store in the Savannah area due to the poor economic base of the area. Their nearest one is up in Atlanta too.

Aside to FFG3: I always try to "buy local" first. I've always tried to keep my money between the bridges, so to speak.

I've heard IKEA will only open a store if the metro area has 1M or more. The last time I was at the Atlanta IKEA, the rumor was that Jacksonville was next. However, that discussion was pre-economic meltdown.

And yes, as far as buying local, the convenience often times outweighs cost considerations, and it does keep smaller businesses viable.

However, Costco is just TOO cool to be disregarded.

I like/love Costco as well.
Shopped there once, or twice, a week at least back in San Diego.
And I'd still drive an hour just to be able to get to a Trader Joe's.
But for my normal needs now a days, everything I need/want is between the bridges.

Hey, Al: There's something like 8 Trader Joe's in ATL now, and several in Charlotte, NC. Everytime I go to Trader Joe's, I tell them that I'm doing my bi-monthly Trader Joe's run ALL THE WAY from SAVANNAH!!! Apparently, they have warehouse issues, and won't be putting one down here until their Florida stores are in operation.

From my typing fingers to God's ears!

I'd even drive to JAX if they had one there! I do still hope for an Ikea there too...2 hours - no problem! Sounds like a great Saturday to me! lol
