Let me give you the usual interpretation of your type of dream.

The house on the hill represents something that you would like to have/see/own, it may be a job, or a family, just anything. You see the high steps and while you know it would be hard to get up there, you still want to go and see more for yourself. It represent an ambition of sorts.

BUT... you know that the house/future/job might be unpleasant. In this case the house may be haunted and is sort of run down. So, you dream because you would like to resolve the situation, one way or another.

Now, that would be the dream interpretation. It probably doesn't fit you at all. It's just an example of how dreams MAY represent something that is also in our waking mind.
