This thread has sent shivers down my spine more so than every single thread on the P & OC forum.

The Dept. of Education needs to be disbanded for the terrorist organization it is. It's obviously an abject failure.

It stands for "Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, and Addition and Subtraction". This tells you the ranks of the operations: Parentheses outrank exponents, which outrank multiplication and division (but multiplication and division are at the same rank), and these two outrank addition and subtraction (which are together on the bottom rank). When you have a bunch of operations of the same rank, you just operate from left to right. For instance, 15 ÷ 3 × 4 is not 15 ÷ 12, but is rather 5 × 4, because, going from left to right, you get to the division first. If you're not sure of this, test it in your calculator, which has been programmed with the Order of Operations hierarchy. For instance, typesetting this into a graphing calculator.

The correct answer is 288. If you dont believe me then go to wolfram alpha and input the equation and it will provide you with 288 as well.
Yeah, I learned that in third grade. It appears what I learned in that grade, along with everything else before and after that grade, are open to my interpretation of what is correct and what isn't. At least that's what many in here are telling us.

48/2(9+3) = 48/(18+6) = 48/24 = 2

OMG! This is still being debated? The answer is NOT 2!!! It is 288. If you think otherwise, you are simply wrong and need to go review some simple algebra and order of precedence.

I think they're just trolling at this point. If they haven't gotten that it's 288 by now, that's there problem.

Problem is, the problem is not written correctly. That was my first take when I saw this. Should be 48/2*(9+3). Even without the "*", it is still implied that you multiply 2*12, then divide 48. Whole thing is just created to get people all riled up. My trusty 12c is at work. I'll see what it say is the correct answer on Tues.

I have a TI-30XIIS.

I type in 48/2(9+3) and get 288.

It is written correctly. You are trying to apply an algebraic rule (implied multiplication) to an arithmetic expression (as defined by the obelus). In arithmetic, implied multiplication does not exist.
