My husband and I will hopefully be moving from the Midwest to Seattle soon. We have always rented/owned small homes with decently-sized, fenced-in backyards that were perfect for our two large dogs (100+lb great dane/bloodhound and 70+lb mutt). Our big dogs are very much part of our family, but we are concerned with how living in a rainy big city will work with them in tow. Can anyone share some advice about how to live in Seattle with two large dogs?

Our dogs are the same size as yours. They're house dogs ... quite happy with walking around the block a couple times a day. Plus the Seattle area has several good size off leash areas. You should have no problem - especially if your dogs run your lives like ours do.

When I lived up there, my roommate and I had a corgi, which I guess is a smaller/medium sized dog... but either way... lots of people in Seattle have larger dogs. It's not uncommon to see someone walking a dog that's 75+ pounds on the street and no one really freaks out. I don't think you should have a problem.

Having a backyard will help, but it depends on where you want to live... if you're doing to be in downtown, Belltown, or Capitol Hill, you'll need to be prepared to shell out a lot of money, or live as close as possible to a dog park, of which there are a fair number.

If you look in North, South, or West Seattle, you can find a place with a yard for much less.

I went to someone's house in Green Lake today and saw the biggest Great Dane I think I've ever seen. Not sure how big their yard was. As long as you don't try to live downtown, you'll find plenty of houses to rent with fenced yards. We have two medium-sized dogs and we have a yard that fits them. Be prepared to pay up to $500 per dog in pet deposit.
