Glad to hear it! I looked at several of those locations before I left. You might seriously check out Cleveland...although believe it or not, it is on the cusp of becoming a hot area; not that anyone on the Cleveland boards believes me! Seeing the same sort of downtown building boom/gentrification that started in Seattle around 1999....I hope it never gets as bad or as expensive as Seattle! Great cultural amenities, sports teams, breweries, music, low cost of housing (but rising) Lake Erie.....reminds me a lot of Seattle "back in the day" actually....anyway, hope you find what you are looking for! And no, I don't work for the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce! Actually looking to move further south in the not too distant future...a bit too crowded for me here, but as far as a city goes, it is actually pretty cool!

Those folks are lovely and about 1000 more times friendly and social then reserved, moody, smug, and snobby Seattleites.. The horrible social scene in Seattle has sucked for decades.

Even rents in Tacoma and all of the south end are getting outrageous.

No argument re: friendlier people! Watch out for the Bible thumpers, though!

Mt Vernon is ridiculously cheap. I've found a couple of 2-3 br. rentals for a friend between $900-$1K/mo. They're on the edges of town, but great homes at a great price. One was a craftsman with all the woodwork and built-ins still there. Beautiful place! But you're right, that those don't represent the norm. Still, they're around. I don't know any other place where rentals like that can be found anywhere near a desirable area, other than Shelton, which seems poised to become a suburb of Olympia.

When I moved to Seattle, I rented a sleeping room for $195 per month. It was dingy and dank, but much better than sleeping outside. Seattle Weekly (now defunct) attacked my landlord as a "slumlord" in a series written by now-Seattle Times writer Nina Shapiro. My landlord ended up forced out of business, but fortunately by then I had moved up the ladder and could afford better.

I moved here in November and paid a 1000 a month for a bedroom and bathroom in Issaquah. Definitely not worth it. But the complex was brand new and all the units were overpriced. (Cougar Mountain)
But I was happy because I have a small pet.

Yea and you can go to a much friendlier city like Louisville KY and pay $750 for a 2 bedroom apt. This area is overrated, too expensive, lousy food, cold, flaky and reserved people, horrible traffic, gas and cigs are a rip off...the only thing here worthwhile is the views due to the mountains and water. Plus the downtime Seattle area is cool. I could care less about views anymore though. Views don't pay the bills. Give me cornfields and cheap rent and I'm good.

South Sound is way more affordable. You could afford a 1br for under 1000 if you go south. Even more so around Olympia. And still be in Western Washington.

I’m actually thinking about taking the deep dive and buying in Tacoma next year. I work in Tukwila so it’s only a somewhat miserable commute. I can afford the rent in Seattle, but I can’t afford to buy.

You know, I almost applied for a position in Charleston. It’d be a great job opportunity. But a 10k pay cut. 7%!!! Income tax. Sales tax. Etc. And Charleston proper is just as expensive as Seattle, though surrounding areas are much cheaper. But I don’t think I would come out ahead. Plus bugs, humid, hurricanes. The grass is not always greener.

Haha! You just sound fed up with something...

There's something very therapeutic about being around snow capped mountains. I sensed it 20 years ago when I lived in Colorado. But then I moved to the east coast and they were gone.

But now by God's grace I'm back!!! I can't put my finger on it.... but it still holds true.

Cheap, affordable rent is therapeutic to me...so is less traffic, and friendlier single women. There are plenty of beautiful mountains back east. New Hampshire, Vermont, Upstate NY, Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee. Are all beautiful states with mountains

Seattle hasn't moved yet on accessory units...that would have a big effect.

Also we outlawed the real micro-type places where you could get something like a college dorm room, for no reason as far as I can tell (let's be honest: they did it to keep the poor folks out).

I said "snow capped" mountains! All year round snow capped.
