Just for a lousy room to rent. Ridiculous. For people who cant afford an apartment, rooms to rent are now becoming unaffordable. Disgusting. Plus these greedy elitists want first, last and utilities..and credit checks and etc. The new greedy Seattle blatantly sucks. Hate what has happened to the area in recent years. Time to relocate...

I agree the cost of renting (living) in Seattle is too high for many (for me at least).

I have no problems with a credit check. It's a fair request and a blemish will not necessarily disqualify someone.

I would do the same if I was renting. (My FICO is 811)

I don't agree with a room costing that much, but most everybody who voted... Or chose not to vote on issues that has led up to Seattle being like this have nobody to blame but themselves.... Everytime any politician tells you that a "little" tax increase will lead to whatever to be free or the gates to heaven being opened up is simply not being truthful at all. But everytime their is a tax increase passed in Seattle/King County, it's passed down to the people in the end. In one form or another... Please don't fall for that BS when a politician tells you that it's a tax that will only effect the rich... BS!! It's going to hit you square in the face in the end!!

Do you really think an apartment or a homeowner, renting a room, is going to eat that increase??? No, it's passed down to the people and I don't blame them at all. Again, it's not right, but it's the reality of believing in a lie.

Wait till they try to convince you that the proposed "Carbon Tax" is a great thing and will fix all our problems... But they will not tell YOU that it's YOU paying for it!! Seriously, how many people reading this were "priced out" of Seattle and now have to commute longer to get to work in Seattle?? Now if you silly enough to support this tax, your commute to work just cost YOU and your family a lot more once this tax goes in effect.

I love Seattle, but we all have choices that we, as individuals, need to make for ourselves in the end. If Seattle is too expensive, you might want to look either north or south of the city because those prices are not going down anytime soon.

With that said, I truly wish the OP well and hope he/she finds a place within their budget.

Checking credit for a lousy room to rent is cruel...unjust and downright discrimatory. Many lower income people do not have great credit. This is an elitist...snobby tactic that contributes to the homeless problem in the area. Shame on these Seattle elitists holding peoples pasts against them for a lousy stinking room to rent. Checking someone's credit for a room to rent??? C,mon

I myself live up north, and its expensive as hell even up north...Snohomish county. There are tons of homeless all over Everett. I myself am getting the hell out of dodge this summer. I heading to the Midwest or to the South. I can rent a mobile home on a 1/4 acre for $800 a month or less all day long in those parts if you know where to look.

A place like White Center, Burien or Lynnwood might be more affordable.

Seattle might have the worst homelessness problem in the country
Credit check reveals your past. If you’ve screwed over one landlord what makes them think you won’t screw over someone else?

If you stumbled across something that eventually became valuable, wouldn't you want to sell it for the best price possible?

Checking credit is something landlords do to ensure their tenants pay. They're absolutely discriminating against people who have a tendency to not make payments as agreed, and they have every right to do so.

Everyone faces higher costs of living in the Seattle area. Not just one group of people.

Low credit scores have nothing to do with making a low income. They have everything to do with measuring financial responsibility.

Homelessness is not related to rising housing costs. 99% of people will get a roommate, move further out, or move someplace else before going homeless. Most homeless people are down on their luck, god bless their soul. But they're people traveling here from California since they've heard how generous all the "elitists" are towards helping the homeless here. Quite a few are hippies.

Socialism is not the answer. It's just as corrupt as any other system, if not more. Short-term it only changes what problems we have. And history tells us exactly how things play out when the government is largely responsible for managing our finances.

No it isn't. This is the norm in every major city, for every type of person that comes through.
