Excitedly relocating to SEA from ATL (Seattle: 2014, apartments, rentals)

Enterprise @ Redmond TownCenter, across from Marriott. @$19/day, compact-intermediate car, weekends, some advance notice is necessary.
Redmond towncenter is ~40min from Pike/Pine on a bad day on #545express (91 runs one way on weekdays, 60 runs on weekends).

If you really need a car, get a beater first.

Zipcar works well in the city. We've subscribed for years through periods of no car/one car/now two cars but also now three drivers (we are a family of four). We still maintain our Zipcar subscription just in case. It costs less than $10 a month to stay active and there are cars available all around us (Central District). The hourly rental fee covers gas and insurance and there are a variety of cars for different tasks, including cargo vans. I recommend it to anyone who wants to try going car-free in Seattle.

So you want to move to a place NOTORIOUS for awful weather and only visited in summer and you’re worried about the weather? On top of that the COL is at least double of ATL and traffic is 1-2 orders of magnitude worse (and I know it’s bad in ATL).

My advice is visit for 2-4 weeks in December to see what it’s really like, you’ll also go from nice southerners to schizophrenic hermits whose lives revolve around working, but that’s the company culture in Seattle...work=life and you’re lucky to be here, so see you Saturday morning, so that’s another thing to consider

I moved to Seattle from Texas 25 years ago. The Seattle darkness (short winter daylight hours plus overcast skies) was an adjustment but the weather is not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. I mean, yes it will be wet during the winter but it's not like that's a secret that people discover only after arriving here. If anything the Seattle cold and wet is OVER-advertised across the country.

I'm still friendly with strangers, too. I *heart* Seattle.

The market is nice in the winter, but I avoid it like the plague when the weather is nice. It gets unbelievably crowded, plus many neighborhoods have really decent year-round farmer's markets for things like produce, flowers, and local crafts. I lived in Capitol Hill for years, and had no problems walking to Pike Place Market. Living at Belmont & Mercer, it took 20-25 minutes (I do walk at a good clip). We checked out Belltown as well, but ultimately chose Cap Hill since there are so many other daily amenities there - like good gyms, several grocery stores, dentists, eye Drs, just as many restaurants and coffee shops, good transit, etc. One of the deciding factors was the proximity of lovely north Capitol Hill to go for a nice evening stroll in, something I didn't feel all that safe doing in Belltown. The fun thing about renting is the flexibility to change things up, but just more food for thought..
