Hankook is looking to build a plant in the southeast. Tennessee, Georgia, and SC are the 3 considerations. This would be another huge tire manufacturing get for this state and will bring good jobs. The company announced a decision by the end of the year. I hope they come.
Wow, this would be pretty big to land another tire manufacturer here in South Carolina. While Hankook is Michelin's direct competitor (Michelin being my employer), I'd still like to see them in this state. This would certainly widen the gap of South Carolina being the leading producer of tires in the country. If anything, I could see it coming down to Georgia and South Carolina due to its access to major ports. Why would Tennessee be in the running if they have no ports?
The article I read was in the Aiken Standard, but it did not specifically mention any areas. Just the states. I'd link it, but they've been restricting their free access to online articles.
Do we know what cities in Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee are under consideration?
Could be anywhere, although all the major tire manufacturing facilities are in the Midlands (Bridgestone in Aiken, Michelin in Lexington, Continental in Sumter). Michelin did recently open a facility in Anderson, however.
Yay for more low paying warehousing & local truck driver jobs! Ummm...y'all know those will make up the vast majority of positions, don't you?
We do live in $10 an hour heaven, don't we! <3
That's not what I heard about Contintental in Sumter. Skilled positions averaged over $45,000/year and professional positions averaged over $85,000/year.
^ I wonder as a percentage, how much of that workforce is "professional" & how much is "skilled"..vs labor positions. I bet the breakdown is something like 5% to 15% to 80%.
I would estimate that it is probably 10% professional to 90% skilled. Just a guess. But an average of $45,000/year for a skilled position is pretty decent money in Sumter.
