I know you all said this has been an unusual winter for South Dakota. I was there two years ago during this time period with no snow and warm days. I am assuming this is not the normal state of affairs.

Yes and no. Sorry to have such a wishy/washy reply, but our weather is very unpredictable. The winter of 1962, I believe was a horrific winter. Then in 1968-1969 there was another fierce winter. The winter of 1996/1997 was terrible. We had a snow blizzard every two or three days and it went on for a prolonged period of time. That's as far back as I am personally aware of, but I do remember my parents talking about terrible winters before that and my grandparents referring to bad winters even further back.

The previous three winters have been very nice here and that happens. I remember in 1982 (?) I was outside washing my car in February.

They do claim that El Nino had an impact on our winter and that's very possible, but there have actually been colder and snowier winters then this past one was. We were just spoiled after having three decent winters.

I have always thought it'd be a slack job to be a meteolorogist in Fla. because your weather is SO consistent compared to ours.
