Does anyone know about this...or better yet have the facts? I've just seen the commercials saying its a bad thing because it's basically a gag law. What's the other side to this?
Update:
I found a link- http://ballotpedia.org/wiki/index.php/South_Dakota_Open_and_Clean_Government_Act_(2008 (broken link))
It pretty much a gag law. If anyone does any sort of business with the goverment on any level its applies. Its a bad deal for anyone who has or may have dealings with the government. This is pretty much spearheaded but folks from outside the state of South Dakota. And as its written may be unconstitutional.
OK, this is how it was explained to me. Suppose an educator or a county employee (auditor, treasurer, etc) has a problem and would like to speak to one of our state Reps or Sen. They would not be allowed to if this new law takes effect.
Keep in mind, I have not personally figured it out, but I'm trusting the person who gave me that info.
I have no idea what prompted this bill, but I'm voting against it.
Governor Mike Rounds has come out in opposition to the measure, saying that is not well thought out and has the potential to interfere with the political rights of South Dakota citizens. Critics of the governor are not surprised by the his position, considering that the he is one of the "recipient(s) of tens of thousands of dollars of campaign contributions from holders of no-bid contractors, contractors who received tens of millions of dollars back".
This nugget was taken from the website in regards to the opposition of the initiative. While I would be voting NO on this one, you can't help but find the irony in that...
OK, this sounds much deeper then the simplistic thing I was told.
HELP????? Guess I don't totally understand this.
