Jonathan, good topic.
My favorite American athlete is Babe Ruth, but I probably telegraphed that..
In my opinion, Ruth is the gold standard by which all great, dominant American pro-athletes are measured.. Helping put the Yankees on the map, the 'House that Ruth built', dominant on both sides of the ball (pitching & hitting).. Ruth's place in the Roaring '20s cultural history.. It's hard to conceive of an athlete replicating his stature & influence(?) I think Gretzky's dominance of North American hockey is almost Ruth'ian.. but bcuz hockey is lower profile in the US than baseball: Gretzky never had the cultural impact & popularity Ruth did.

As far as just personal, subjective favorites ('current & all-time').. I like a lot of NFL QBs; Tom Brady, Terry Bradshaw, Jake Plummer, Neil Lomax, Boomer Esiason, Otto Graham..

Dr J. & Larry Bird in pro hoops..
