The fact they were both slamless gave this match extra tension, because winning your first slam can be career-changing.
It was more tension than Djokovic-Federer Wimbledon 2019, because both those guys have won enough.
Although if Nadal-Federer are tied on 20 slams and they meet in Australia 2021 it will be similar tension to Thiem-Zverev.
Even though this US Open final was see-sawing throughout, it was predictable in the sense that we know Thiem is mentally tougher than Zverev, so Thiem should win if its close.
What we can say is that Zverev has the physical tools to beat Thiem in a grand slam final, in fact I think it was pretty obvious that Thiem was suffering more physically.
So if Zverev can put it together mentally in future, he'll win slams, although he may have to wait for the big3 to retire.
Zverev certainly had his chances. I was rooting for him. His serve really let him down, maybe that was nerves.
They both played their hearts out. Great match, and congratulations to Thiem for hanging in there and making the crucial shots when needed. I loved seeing them shake hands and hug afterwards.
I'm concerned for Zverev's career, because he's had the double-fault problems for a while now, and is yet to find a solution.
He served 15 doubles in this final, and a couple in the tiebreaker.
Now that Ferrer is coaching Zverev, his fitness is outstanding and he looked in better shape than Thiem in the final, and Zverev is arguably more talented than Thiem too, but Thiem will win their close matches if Zverev continues to have the serving yips.
