As I mentioned, I went to Branson, MO with family. We loved it. I noticed that housing prices are much more reasonable. I told my wife I would like to try to get a job in the Springfield or Branson areas. What kind of work is out there those days? I have two certificates in Machining Technology and Composite Technology (high tech plastic manufacturing). Are there any jobs out there that I would qualify for or could try to apply for? I liked the hills and the fact that the state has more trees than we have in Kansas!

I don't know about your job situation, but I will tell you Missouri is just like the rest of the U.S. It's rough here. Our housing prices are cheaper then alot of other places as is our taxes. Springfield would probably be the best place for you to look over Branson. Branson is for the most part a tourist destination while Springfield is a growing city. I live in Central MO and we vacation in Branson for a quick getaway. It's a beautiful area with our lush trees and hills. I would go to the yellow pages for Missouri and look up plastic manufacturing and I would inquire with the companies directly. Sorry I cant help you there, but if you have any questions about MO I will try and answer them for you. If you make the move I wish you the best and enjoy all of what the Ozarks has to offer. Just south of Springfield and Branson is Bentonville Arkansas, just as beautiful and with it being the headquarters of Wal-Mart, I know that the job market there is better then in most places. Good luck.

I was looking in the Classifieds in the News-Leader online and there were very few jobs. Are there more listed in the paper itself than online? I'm from the area and my husband and I want to relocate there. His experience is primarily in factory work, but some custodial and some construction too.

Very few jobs that don't have to be advertised in a newspaper (govt jobs, jobs where the employer wants to hire an immigrant but has to satisfy ad requirements before doing so) are advertised in newspapers any more. And of course most jobs aren't advertised at all-- they're found by finding the employer and demonstrating an interest, or better still, by using connections and networking to get in. For something as specialized as high-tech plastic manufacturing, the original poster should be able to find who, if anyone, in the Springfield/Branson area does that, and then ask around in his network to find out how to approach them.

Ted, read the thread about " May I Gripe ". Its about jobs and wages in Branson and surrounds.
My eldest son is a plastics moulder supervisor and loves Branson. He could not get work in that field in Branson. Perhaps Springfield, but that involves living in that area. I like to visit Springfield, but prefer to live in the greater Branson area, others the reverse.
The jobs you mention are specialised. I suggest you do a basic com****r search for that field of endeavor in the Branson/Springfield area.

Try Des Moines, Omaha, or Minneapolis instead. Much lower unemployment rate in those cities.

The OP should listen to these words of wisdom from a poster with a high reputation ranking.

Moreover, moving up north would put the OP closer to real lakes, and far from Missouri reservoirs.

Or you could try to get an $8 an hour job in a retail store and post about how much you like that job and how you would never ever leave that job.

Missouri is like anywhere else. It depends on what your skills are. There are jobs to be found in most communties but they aren't going to be management high paying jobs. You need to get the paper from the area you want to live and look there. I think that you will have better luck more towards Springfield that in Branson.

I'd like to suggest that you consider starting your own business when you get here. That way you can create jobs for others that are less enterprising, you'll be well thought of in the community, and if you structure the business properly, soon you'll have the opportunity to become an "absentee owner" and can spend all your leisure time on the lake!
