Really 3 kids shoplifting some jeans makes the area that unsafe? Its a mall, shoplifting happens everywhere, not just in the bad parts of town. Last time I was at West County mall I saw three girls getting stopped for shoplifting some jewelery, but I hardly feared for my life. I'm sure even the malls out in the suburbs of Chicago saw their fair share of shoplifting.

Was that yesterday that you saw the three girls get stopped? Because I was in West County Mall yesterday and saw three girls, two in handcuffs and the third holding a baby, being escorted to the mall police substation in the middle of the afternoon. Kind of a sad sight.

Richmond Heights, Brentwood, and Clayton do a pretty good job of keeping the riff-raff out of these areas...rarely if ever is there any kind of criminal activity around here. As we've all said, shoplifting a pair of jeans is really not that serious of a crime at all. Not even the safest areas of any town in the U.S. are going to completely crime-free. A thing to note is that per capita, St. Louis County is one of the most crime-free counties in the country. You're in the wrong part of town if you're worried about crime around the Galleria. North County is generally the area to be afraid of...particularly in the area east of I-170, north of Delmar, and south of I-270. I'd say this is a roughly 8 mile by 2 mile area, and it's predominantly black and lower-middle to lower class.

As a resident of the mid-county area (very close to the Galleria), I will have to admit that burglary has increased in the last few years but it is primarily limited to the big shopping areas (Galleria, Brentwood Square/Promenade, etc) or late night unlocked car break ins where the burglars perform the usual "grab and run" type of thefts. Actually fearing for your safety because of crime never enters your mind. I am much more afraid of the driving of some of my elderly neighbors than of any criminal element!

Now what was truly scary was the huge boom at the Immacolata church a few days ago. We wondered what in the heck that loud noise was at 10:30 at night (we could hear it quite well from inside our home). And then last night between 9 and 10 we still hear random crazy folks firing off more fireworks in their yards somewhere near our neighborhood full of brown, parched yards. Now those are the people I fear!

Some guys stole some jeans in a shopping mall. Ergo, the entire surrounding neighborhood is dangerous.

As the Guinness guys would say - BRILLIANT!

Comments like this is exactly why I can't stand St. Louis. North County isn't that bad, you gotta live in the right pockets. Seriously, you think Chesterfield's all that much better? Their malls have plenty of crimes, but they can definitely pay the media off from reporting it. I'll be glad when I'm done with school and move back to Seattle.

Meh. I actually dislike the West County food court. Galleria does suck. My kudos go to the Mills and Chesterfield mall.

As a teen, I worked in retail at a 'good' mall in an affluent area of Brisbane, Australia. Honestly, it was "odd" if there weren't at least 3 separate shoplifting incidents throughout the day in the mall.

The shoplifters ranged from swanky rich private school kids looking for kicks, or being dared by their friends- right down to the 'common' thief.

Just because there is a shoplifting incident DOES NOT mean the mall is dangerous or bad. It's a fact of life. You're going to get these incidents in every mall across America.

Just recently at the mall near me (in North Carolina)- by all accounts a 'safe' mall, a woman was arrested as she and her two young children were systematically shoplifting from stores throughout the mall (the poor kids got roped into it no doubt).

What I'm saying is it happens everywhere. When I move back to St. Louis, a shoplifting incident at the Galleria isn't going to phase me in the slightest. When there is an all out turf war with a bevvy of gun fire ringing throughout the mall, then you can tell me it's getting dangerous.
