Does anyone do the hokey pokey anymore at weddings? I suppose polkas are out too...

Even a lot of the people I know who've had gaps have said how awesome that will be. My parents had a 2 p.m. wedding but instead of a gap just hosted an afternoon reception, but I know most people really want to host the standard evening reception.

Thats what my sister did for her wedding. She had it at the Chase Park Plaza. The ceremony was out on the balcony, and as soon as it was over, we walked inside the ballroom and had appetizers and cocktails. They had almost all their wedding pictures done before the ceremony, so that they would be able to go right into mingling with the guests and enjoying cocktail hour. I know some people believe all the superstition about not seeing the bride before the ceremony, but the day flowed so much better without the waiting period as the bride and groom went off to have pictures taken.

Y'all are bringin' tears to my eyes! Former St. Louisian transplanted to Texas 26+ years ago! The best part of St. Louis is that there are so many locally owned restaurants. There's no need to go to chain when you have some many great choices.

When I come home, I head to the following...or would if I had more time on my hands: (partial list.)

Ted Drewes---frozen concrete w/ hot fudge!
Crown Candy--need a police escort to the building, but once there...yummy!!!!
Pasta House---toasted ravioli, house salad and Pasta con Broccoli! ---actually have recipes for the salad & the pasta so I can make those here.
Famous Barr---French Onion Soup---don't think they serve it any more, but that used to be a staple when shoping w/ my mother. I found the recipe on line and made it last winter. DELISH!!!!
O'Connell's---great burgers and fried mushrooms. Oooo---the roof of my mouth hurts just thinking about how many times I burnt it while eating those fried s'rooms.
Dooleys---I think they closed years ago, but they had great burgers with cheddar cheese they scooped out of a brown crock.
Spiro's---for Greek food. I like the location on Watson Road, but also like the one on Natural Bridge.
Chase Park Plaza/Tenderloin Room---must have the Mayfair dressing on salad.

We're doing a first look too! Neither of us are the least bit superstitious and I love that we'll have photos out of the way by the time the ceremony starts -- plus some of the first look pics I have seen are incredibly intimate sweet moments and I love the idea of our photog catching that!

Aww.. Crown Candy isn't dangerous. My grandparents first met there back in the late 40s when my grandmother was a waitress. They go eat there all the time, so I've been going there ever since I can remember. Yeah, the neighborhood is a little rough looking, but nothing too bad.

A few places around town claim to make Famous Barr french onion soup. I know Jilly's says theirs is the Famous Barr recipe, and I've seen it on a few other menus but can't remember where.

texanne you should come back and make a stop at Crown Candy. Old North St. Louis has seen significant gentrification in recent years. It's still a small area of progress, but it's progress nonetheless.

Though frankly I never found Crown Candy to feel dangerous simply because of the hoards of folks who are always around.

The last time I was in Ted Drewes over on Grand I was talking to a very nice lady and a cop tried to arrest me because he thought she was a hooker I was trying to pickup. But on a lighter note: Great frozen custard ice cream!

I agree it's not the best of neighborhood's however, they did manage to attempt to cleanup that area over the years somewhat.

So there is really no good wings place? I mean I guess they dont have to be as good as Buffalo, NY's wings. But there has to be some decent ones! That is quite unfortunate..

An article in STL Today named these places as having the best wings in STL (listed alphabetically): Culpepper's, Ferguson Brewing Company, Johnny's in Soulard, Peel in Edwardsville, Poor Richard's in Fenton and Eureka, and Syberg's in Affton.
And The Riverfront Times named these: Kirkwood Station Brewing Company, Peel, Pi Pizzarias, St. Louis Wing Company in Rock Hill, and O! Wing Plus in Overland.
The only place named in both articles is Peel. Could they have the best wings of all?
