Sadly no. The schools in St. Louis are abysmal. If you had one or two you could probably afford to send them to private school with the money you'd save by living in the city. But 4 is very pricey! There are some cool inner-ring suburbs out there, but really they'd be too pricey for you to afford a home large enough for your family.

But hey - once the little ones are grown you can get yourself one pf those cool diverse historic places you'll love!

It's too bad. I would really enjoy being in the city and I think the experience is particularly special for kids - very unique and they are exposed to so much more diversity!

We are Zen Buddhist and I am Korean/Italian so we would very much welcome the "mix" of religions/cultures/philosophies/races, but, quality schools are more important. And, anyway, if we live near the city we can still expose them to the arts, culture, etc.

OK - I've been thinking about you all morning and I have a couple of ideas. Look for something in the Webster school district (Webster Groves, Shrewsbury, Rock Hill) I think you can find a home there in your price range, and it'll be older with more character and I think you'll really like the area better. More diverse but the schools are still very good. It'll be tight on your budget, but I think it can be done.

Like this place in Shrewsbury with easy access to 44 for a short (less than 15 minute) commute for the hubby. Single Family Home - 7402 Lansdowne Ave, Shrewsbury, MO, 63119 - Realtor.com (http://www.realtor.com/realestate/shrewsbury-mo-63119-1099441804/ - broken link)

or this one: Single Family Home - 1104 Des Peres Ave, Rock Hill, MO, 63119 - Realtor.com (http://www.realtor.com/search/listingdetail.aspx?sby=3&ctid=77976&ml=3&mxp=22&bd =5&typ=1&sid=0465a56c50014ca38f17cf415cddeaf8&lid= 1098001470&lsn=6&srcnt=13#Detail - broken link)

or this one: http://www.realtor.com/realestate/rock+hill-mo-63119-1102518080/ (broken link)

I really think this area will be more up your alley than Fenton. Fenton just feels like a bad fit for you to me.

I live just west of the Botanical Gardens in the SW Garden District, and I absolutly love it! Lots of curving little one-way streets that cut down on traffic and keep it quiet, plus I'm close to a lot of things: Botanical Garden, Tower Grove, all the ethnic places to eat on Grand. One exit down on the freeway is Lafayette Square, the other side of Kingshighway is The Hill (Little Italy), and about a 10 minute drive to Forest Park and Central West End.
I just recently moved here from out of state, and honestly couldn't have built a better neighborhood for myself. Oh, and the rent is cheap...$600 a month for a reall great 1 bedroom. Go on Craigslist and do a search using the keyword 'Garden', and it should turn up some good listings.
Good luck!
