I would recommend taking a look at Soulard which is just south of downtown. It contains a lot of affordable apartments and most have balconies or courtyards. Its mainly an area with 2-3 floor apartment buildings with lots of bars, dining, and other amenities. I know there is an apartment building on 12th or 13th that has a pool which is rare in STL city.

Washington Ave is really not that hoity toity. Most residents range from college students, young professionals, empty nesters, and some upper class. Also a decent amount of units have balconies

Not sure if you are interested in the Ballwin area, but they recently opened a Life Time gym out there. Since you're from Chicago, you should be familiar with them. A buddy of mine lives in the U-City loop, works in Clayton, and goes to that gym. He doesn't seem to mind the distance and says it has everything.

Ballwin is too far out of St. Louis. I would love to work out at Lifetime, but don't want to commute to go and workout...

There is a new Snap Total Fitness or Snap Fitness Center (or something) in Clayton on Clayton Road probably 1/2 a mile off of Skinker. It's brand new, just came in to a new development at street level. It is right next to "My Daddy's Cheesecake" in the same building.

Checked out a cool one bedroom apartment in an old mansion in Near South City. The apartment is great, the mansion is "interesting" and the location ok.

I checked out Centennial Commons (gym) and it was nice and the people I spoke with were great! I checked out the university named streets parallel and just north of Delmar near the Loop. Love the area and just wish that the for rent signs in St. Louis would put info on it so I didn't need to call 3-bedroom apartments.

I also checked out the Center of Clayton (gym). It was really nice and probably the gym I will join. Living in the area makes it cheaper.

So, apartments in CWE and Clayton and Delmar Loop is where I want to be so as to be closer to the gym....

will keep you updated! Any more suggestions would be great.

If you end up in Clayton, the "Center of Clayton" has a pool, basketball court, workout area (though I did not notice any free weights), and track. In Brentwood, the Mid-County YMCA also has all of this. Those are the only two gymns I have experience with. Currently pay in the upper $40's at the YMCA right now.
