Nothing wrong with being earthy. I really like CNY and the rest of upstate New York but the only way New York is going become viable again as a business destination and a place to live and raise a family is to make some tough decisions and unfortunately the governor, Democrat-controlled Assembly and quasi Republican-controlled Senate (when including a few members of the "Independent" Democrat caucus) are not willing to acknowledge the reality that New York is not competitive with the rest of the country and even most neighboring states when it comes to high taxation and unsustainable public employee pensions that are on par with Illinois and California.. After reading the 300+ pages of the governor's "State of the State Address," I see no evidence that things will improve from a fiscal or economic development standpoint. Cuomo's upstate economic development strategy outside of greater Buffalo and Albany focuses largely on casino development, hydrofracking, and thousands of low income housing units.

Lived up here along time I have. Would like to have prolly lived out my days up here.

But for all the reasons you state plus more NY just isn't gonna make it.

One "plus" I guess is NY's massive debt problem is finally being talked about. In my little right wing world its been talked about for some time but you never heard anything about it main stream. This week it finally made the Post Standard. I was super surprised when some of the low information type voters at work were talking about NYs debt problem.

As bad as NY is on the surface its far worse then it appears. And alot of these things are gonna start hitting over the next few years.

I actually agree, but things are more global and many of the jobs that have left the state have gone to other countries, let alone competing with other states. I sometimes wonder if there is a correlation between jobs leaving states like NY and going to other states and how educational rating on a global level has declined in regards to the US. I think it is more complicated than that, but I just wonder.

I also agree with the mismatch of skills/education and job openings. More later.....

These meetings usually have a sense of optimism and this one didn't really have that warm and fuzzy feeling. Destiny gave their overview which talked about all the things that are coming although it was all national chains talked about. There are a few smaller local companies that are joining Destiny including one shop that will sell all local good, but none of that was mentioned. They were very proud of their Canadian visitors and the response they have received from the Canadians on TripAdvisor.

The head of Centerstate said it best that with the 9th highest poverty rate in the nation and over 40% dropout rate in the city schools, there is no way ignore those statistics. That isn't a direct quote, but once the video and minutes are uploaded, you can see exactly what he said.

The bar charts and statistics portion of the program basically said that since there was no huge drop for CNY compared to the rest of the nation that also means there will be no big gains.

The brochure handed out showed upcoming projects for all of upstate NY and there wasn't much to show for Onondaga County, but the next two to three years will be continue to be all Meds and Eds because the public sector still isn't secure enough to spend money.

Good information and it is good that they touched on two serious issues in the city center. I think the poverty rate is tricky in that there is a college town component within the city and in turn is a part of the poverty rate. Off campus students are included in the poverty rate according to the census and I believe it adds about 5% or so to the rate. With that said, there are parts of town where the issue needs to be addressed.

In terms of schools, I think the SCSD needs to look at similar districts(not the same as cities) that are achieving at a high level and perhaps try to compete for the souls of educating urban youth by creating more charter schools and/or magnet schools that emphasize strengths in students.
