If you hold the POWER button down for 10+ seconds it is suppose to force any Android device to shut off. Try that?

Exhibit A why a device with a non-removable battery is a bad idea. Don't know why google decided to copy apple on this one.

Did you get your Nexus going again?

I have a Nexus 7. I haven't had any problems.

I did look a lot of Nexus and Android forums and several people had the same problem with the tablet freezing up and holding the power button in for a while was often suggested for a fix.

The #1 reason is that you can make them thinner.
The 2nd reason being: planned obsolescence.
