We are moving to Tallahassee in a few weeks...all happening pretty quickly, so need some solid answers. We have never even visited there, but grew up in S. Fl.
We are looking for temporary housing (furnished house or apt) while we look for a permanent place. We have to sell our house here,in NC, so... We would like it in the Chiles high school district, as we have a son going into 10th grade. We also hope for a 6 month lease and we have a dog..(40 lb. well trained). I imagine most rental complexes are filled with college kids and hope to avoid that. Nothing against college kids, but..

We are also open to renting a home for a year (unfurnished) with the same considerations.

Any ideas or advice will be very welcome. Thank you!

If you're looking for the Chiles district (not a bad idea), there aren't too many rental complexes that feed into that school. I know there is a Barrington condo complex that has rentals available. You can likely find a house to rent in the Killearn Lakes neighborhood, especially since real estate in TLH is still not moving. I would even consider approaching someone with a house for sale to see if you could rent for 6 months or a year.

The Chiles district is a long way from FSU's campus and does not cater to the college crowds. A much different atmosphere than the areas closer to campus.

I agree that living in the Chiles district is not a bad idea, although Leon and Lincoln high schools are also pretty good, so I wouldn't necessarily rule them out. I'd suggest that you get with a property management company (Google "property management Tallahassee") and also contact one or two of the bigger real estate companies (e.g., Coldwell Banker) and spell out to them what you're looking for. There are lots of houses and townhomes in Tallahassee available for rent, and the realtors and property management people will be able to tell you if a short-term rental is possible. Just a guess, but I think you might do better with a one-year lease, rather than a six-month lease.

When we first moved to Tallahassee 15 years ago, we worked with a realtor who knew someone in a property management company that had a house for rent that we loved (btw it was in the Chiles district although we didn't have school age kids). We lived there for our first year and took our time looking around for the house that we eventually bought.

I think real estate prices will continue to be in the crapper a year from now, so that reinforces the idea to rent for a while when you move to TLH. If things work out, you find an area you like, and you decide to buy a house after a year ... it will still be a buyer's market then.

We moved to Killearn Lakes in '95 mostly due to the excellent schools: Killearn Lakes Elementary / Deerlake Middle / Chiles High. It worked out great for us.

Currently there are plenty of houses for sale and a fair number for rent around the neighborhood. Here is a link to the HOA, if you go to the publications / downloads there are a series of newsletters that should help you get a flavor for the place; check out the ads for real estate professionals, you might want to try Alison Riley who is very familiar with the area.
