I'm moving soon to the Tampa area for a job at Macdill AFB. I'm looking for a neighborhhod with good schools and low crime (who isn't?) within a reasonable distance to Macdill. My kids are 8 and 11. Any recommendations? If public schools are not good I am considering Catholic schools.

I'm stationed here now, just got here in July. I use to be stationed at Hickam for 3 years back in 2001. I didn't buy, I'm renting since I don't have my boys with me. I go back to Ft Walton Beach, FL to see them about every other weeeknd. However, Ashton Woods has some nice houses that I was going to buy before I changed my mind to renting, but schools might be an issue.

I'm long gone from Tampa (left in Apr 2007). Decided it wasn't the right place.

Thumbs down Don't get homeowners insurance from Liberty Mutual

Anyone moving or currently in Florida: beware of Liberty Mutual homeowners insurance of Florida. I receive a letter today from Liberty Mutual Florida stating that we are being DROPPED - our home owners insurance policy has been cancelled - as of our forthcoming renewal date of Nov 2011.

I've been with Liberty Mutual of Florida for 15 years; from my first townhome, then converted to an apartment/fire policy, then converted to a homeowners policy .. now that I have a wife and 2 young children to protect in this regard.

In all of the 15 years, I have not once submitted a claim. I have, however, dealt with their oftentimes very significant increases in policy premiums; especially over the last 5 years.

What an absolute shame and disgrace, Liberty Mutual. The letter offers their "apology for any inconvenience". Inconvenience? What an understatement. You F**KED us, Liberty Mutual, plain and simple.

Anyone moving to Florida needs to research the homeowners insurance issue. Some companies will no longer write policies there forcing more people into the state run insurance which has been bleeding money.

Since its completely off topic and revived anyway, military members can just get USAA since its far cheaper than private insurance ANYWAY.
