It is typical FL logic. They drive here with no car insurance and continue to do so because it is easy to do so.

Rather than impound the vehicles and get them off the road, same thing with suspended DLs.

Yet the people who follow the rules here have pay this huge increase.

I just registered last week. It goes by the weight of your car. Both my car (Audi A4 convertible) and my boyfriends (Chevy trailblazer) fall into the same weight category so it must be pretty generalized. I did it the day before my birthday when all your stuff expires. I paid $350 plus when the title comes in from my leasing company they will send me a bill for another $90 she said. My license ran me around $55 I believe. It's very expensive because they don't have state income tax here

Do you have to retitle if you're registering a car that's never been registered in FL before? Some states don't make you change the title as well... I also saw something on the website about having a law enforcement officer verify the VIN. How on earth do you arrange for that--just go to your local cop shop?

Why is it so expensive? My tabs are $ 99.00 a year so would I only pay a one time transfer then my usual tabs each year?

Yes, just had mine registered a few weeks ago. Because I am a new Florida resident (have never lived in this state), there was the extra charge. Paid upwards of $450-500!

No, it is not expensive.

Once again, I am amazed at the ignorance of Florida residents who have neither traveled to nor lived in a different state in their life.

Many states charge an annual fee based on the value of the vehicle or assess a personal property tax based on the vehicle's value. In addition, you are required to submit to an annual auto inspection, and if there is ANYTHING wrong with your car, you have to have it fixed immediately or NO TAG FOR YOU!

People who say "I wish we had auto inspections here" have never lived in a state where a low-level government employee can force you to drop a grand on repairs that may be as inconsequential as a little crack in your bumper or emissions that are slightly out of a very narrow govt-mandated range.

A new car in Indiana, for example, requires a biannual registration that can easily surpass $1,000. Yeah, and they have a state income tax, too.

Nah. You just go to the DMV to register your car and get your license. When it is your turn and they need the VIN you walk outside with them, show them your car, and they write down the VIN at that time.
