Mentioning the RNC with Gasparilla was a comparison to the DNC and Charlotte-Fest, not a suggestion to have the two events occur simultaneously. Besides, Gasparilla is much more than the Night Parade. Do you recall the Gasparilla Music Festival downtown and the great turn-out that it had? Or do you just sit at home and bash Tampa all day?

But in Charlotte BOTH WERE going on nearly simultaneously, without a problem, apparently. Would never happen here. And the music festival was great. Lots of fun bands. Wish Tampa would do things like that more often. They could do a scaled down version of that every Friday night, and it would bring much needed business and people into the downtown area after dark.

But Gasparilla the parade? What a joke.

The article was not about the festival, or about comparing conventions or political affiliations. This article was about the fact that anytime there is a huge event in Tampa, the cops treat its citizens like Communist Russia. And its true, look at any holiday or big event; there are cops out by the hundreds harrassing everyone. To any native or anyone in the bay area for a number of years, it is a known fact that HCSO and TPD (and to an extent FHP and SPD) get their rocks off on stuff like this.

I agree with you, but to be fair, Tampa Bay has waay more than their fair share of world class boozers and trouble makers. I've had out of town visitors comment about the excessive drinking at even the most mundane of events. Combine that with mind numbing heat and humidity and it could be a powder keg.

I agree, and thats another fundamental issue that makes this city "less than desirable" to some of the people in this country. The people here.

Perhaps you haven't traveled enough. Every city has "more than its fair share of boozers and troublemakers." Even Austin, Texas, which CNBC recently voted as the "best city in America for happy hour".

I want to personally congratulate TPD and all area law enforcement on a job well done regarding security at the RNC. I know that if something bad would have happened, all of you on this board would have been the first to complain about the poor planning or poor security efforts. Thank god nothing did.

I was in DC on 9/11, and I can tell you that you don't know what it's like to be scared until you watch a plane dive into the Pentagon.

And I am a Democrat.
