I've been saying this for sometime now and it seems experts agree. From the comments I've seen here on C-D and the attitude I witnessed when I lived there it is obvious that many people in the area don't take the threat seriously.

The flip side of years of no hurricanes: Good luck runs out

Yup. So is LA. Citizens of both cities are not prepared, because as you said...they don't take the threat seriously.

Has been for years. One day a CAT5 will come up the pipe and make landfall in Tarpon springs and bring a 28 ft surge up the bay. Maybe this year or another 50.

First, the forecast for tropical activity for this year is very "quite" because of El Nino which is in place. US as a whole is in hurricane "draught" as 9 years has passed since it has been hit by one. Last was Wilma in 2005.

Second, anybody who knows about statistics will tell you that the "overdue" phrase is really mean nothing. Just because Tampa Bay wasn't hit for long-time doesn't make it ripe for one this year or the next. You could easily be hit two years in a row.

Third, does not being hit for sometime make a difference? Sure. Because people has built quite a bit on places that they shouldn't-can you hear the scream Tampa General Hospital?

I wasn't implying that the Tampa Bay area will be hit this year.

I would say "overdue" is accurate since it's been 94 years since the last major storm.

There has been tremendous growth since 1921, and a lot of that growth was before the current building codes and in flood zones. Not a good combination.

Eventually it will happen and it will go down as one of the costliest storms in history.

I'm not sure exactly what OP expects me to do as a resident. Have sleepless nights? Board up my house right now? Evacuate today? I have the ample supplies that many experts recommend. I have storm shutters on the windows. I have an evacuation plan if needed. I've attended seminars about what to expect and how to prepare.

Area residents are aware that they live along the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean hurricanes track up the coasts every year. Other than being Chicken Little as the OP come across, the thing to do is have a plan, watch the forecasts, evacuate if recommended.I don't think storms realize we're "overdue" and change course to hit us accordingly. Weather doesn't work like that

For someone who lives in N.C. thank for your concern and alarming us that we're "overdue".

Excuse me now as I go to the Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco CDF forums and remind them that they have a risk for a major earthquake, then head to Kansas, Oklahoma, and the midwestern states to remind them that tornadoes are headed their way any day now.

Unlike tornado's and earthquakes hurricanes don't pop up un-announced...we will get ample warning...
