Overhead power lines (FL is loaded with them) dont hold up to winds very well, especially when the wind is blowing all day.

It's neither hype or group hysteria, its a concept called "be prepared" for anything that could happen. If nothing happens, wont have to buy gas or non-perishable foods for a while.

In 2004 before I went to lunch the weather reports said it would be a west coast problem. 2 hours later it was an Orlando problem. I lived in Orlando at that time. It was Hurricane Charley
1. Nope, never lived without power for 2 weeks. Closest was 5 days with below freezing temperatures after a winter hurricane dropped 40-50" of snow with 80+ mph winds lasting 3 days, drifts 15 feet high covering homes. Roads impassable for more than a week, people died from cold, starvation, medical emergencies, exposure, etc. Try that some time.

2. It's 2016 now, the rumor is weather forecasting has greatly improved since 2004.

3. I've been through 5 hurricane hits so far and yes, I agree everyone should always be prepared and stay aware.

I'm hesitant to say this, as I know this was, and is, a killer storm that has left many people dead and taken away others homes, but here in St Pete, yesterday was one of the nicest days of the year. A little overcast, wonderfully breezy all day long, and a beautiful sunset.

Yet if the storm had changed direction just a little bit, it would have been a disaster for us too. We were very, very lucky.

Weather forecasting has gotten better but mother nature runs the show as she sees fit.

You can keep cold weather and all that goes with it, I had my fill of it.
