Hey everyone! I am relocating to Tampa next year for my job. I am thinking about living downtown because I don't think I could handle the burbs, and I really like what the city has to offer. I'm an artsy person and enjoy having a nightlife, going to art museums and the theater, and also local markets. I don't have kids so I don't need to worry about that. I really like the Encore complex that's being developed, and Ybor City looks pretty cool to live near. I know in the past these have been considered rough areas, but I don't always believe people because we all have a different idea of what rough is. So... I was wondering if anyone on here lives in or near Ybor City and could tell me what it is like. Thanks in advance!

I'd love to live in the Channelside, Aquarium area where there are tons of apartment buildings. Seems like it would be interesting place. Not sure about night time risks with safety, but daytime, it's a pleasant place to be. I run a 5 mile route in that area (drive in from my community). Channelside is going to be hopping in the next several years, but construction will be taking over shortly.

As far as Ybor, wouldn't live there, but expect it'll be another place where development occurs, especially if the baseball team builds its new stadium in that area in the next 3-5 yrs.

My preference for urban living in the TB area is ST Pete though near USF/Marina/Dali. Very nice apartment buildings, lots to do there.

Encore is mixed income housing. If you are looking for subsidized housing this may be good. Otherwise, rents are lower than what you would pay elsewhere for the same location/type of place to attract non-subsidized renters.

Ybor is up and coming, but in my opinion it's not yet a safe place to live. I think it will be within time though.

What is your budget per month?

What do you mean by subsidized? Because rent there is like $1000, and you have to make 2.5 times more monthly, so it’s not like low income housing. In Tallahassee my rent was $830, and my mortgage in Destin was $640, so maybe I don’t have a good idea of how expensive rent is in Tampa, but $1000 is steep for me. Luckily I rent out my Destin townhouse and can use that income. What’s a decent area cost?

Thank you for all the helpful info! I’ll look into that area!

One thing to consider, there are areas off the Selmon Expressway exit @ Brandon where your trip into Tampa is a short shot on the expressway - you can access all the good things about Tampa/Channelside/Ybor but pay apartment prices in Brandon. Thinking Falkenberg as well as Brandon Parkway areas.

That's a thought, but I really want to live where I can walk or bike to places of interest. I will be working in Wesley Chapel, but don't want to live there. I'd def rather comute and live in a place with things to do nearby.
