35 years in FL and have never evacuated. That includes 13 years in Treasure Island, a lovely beach town.

25+ years here, never evacuated. Have a whole house standby generator and hurricane shutters on the windows, we just batten down the hatches and ride it out.

Never do anything except watch all the crazy people freaking out and evacuating into the path of the cane.

Often true.

When I first moved to our new house a few years ago, some hurricane was supposed to come here - as they said a week out from actual landfall. New neighbors were panicking - even tho those of us who have lived in FL a while said it was waaaay too early to panic. They put up shutters days in advance.

When the 'storm' actually got here a week later ... 15 minutes of rain and it was a bit windy during the day.

I’ve told out of state friends that worst part of a hurricane is the 3-5 days before it arrives. The angst over whether or not and where it will land are more stressful than any hurricane I’ve been through.

We live 1.5 miles from the ocean. We have evacuated twice in 6+ years. Fortunately we have friends in Tallahassee for those emergencies. We were supposed to evacuate for Ian but didn't and it was a little rain and some winds. I would be lying if I said I didn't get a bit anxious about evacuation and potential hurricanes, but I wouldn't move anywhere else, hurricane or not. We used to live in Buffalo and those snowstorms were a lot worse, especially that last one. Those dreary winters were terrible.

Fun fact, legend has it that the Tocobaga tribe has kept Tampa Bay safe from hurricanes for the past half millennium. I’m not sure if it’s the mounds they built or a blessing placed on the bay, but whatever they did it’s working. Charley was forecast to be a direct hit in 2004, only to change course hours before and hit 120 miles south. The exact same thing happened again with Irma in 2017 then Ian again in 2022. For it to happen 3 times now seems like more than coincidence at this point…

A blessing for some but a curse for those in W. Pasco wishing and hoping for a cane.
