Where do you stay when evacuating?

0, I wouldn’t leave except for a Cat 5 and they’re exceedingly rare. If I left, I’d fly out if possible as driving can be a major headache when 3 million other people are leaving.

I'm far enough inland (between Tampa and Plant City) that I don't evacuate. I live in a concrete block home atop a rise that is over 100 feet above sea level. County water with septic.

Lost power for five days with Ian, a tree on the corner knocked down a line.
Ran a small generator for my fridge, freezer, tv, lights and a couple fans. Post storm weather was nice, didn't need to use my backup window ac. Cold showers kinda sucked.

I leave when the storm leaves the coast of Africa! I immediately start driving in my "bug out prepper mobile" right towards Montana wearing my tin foil hat! I avoid the midwest tornados, the Colorado rockslides and always fill my windshield wiper fluid to the top when I get near the wildfires out west, you can't be too careful and a quick spray on the windshield keeps the glass from melting!

Seriously, I've never evacuated and have lived in Florida since the mid-70s, always within 8-10 miles of the coastline. Some people head to Orlando (abundance of hotels, restaurants, etc). I'd rather stay put unless there is a Cat 5 making landfall in my city........then I think it is time to go. GA state line is doable in less than 1/2 day from most of the state but I95 hugs the coast which isn't ideal if the storm is heading up the coast.

I'm in North Pinellas and because of our elevation, we never evacuate.

Get a gas powered generator for your home, and no reason to leave even if you lose electrical power from the grid.

Be aware that most solar panel systems will not power your house if the electric grid is down.

Flood zones are important. I will never live in a flood zone that requires evacuation. I live in a new house built to current wind mitigation standards. I also have hurricane shutters, if needed.

Having said that, I do have an evacuation plan if needed. Best advice : Plan early and, if needed, leave early.

I ask to those who live between Hollywood and West Palm Beach, please:

Is living west of US 1 an advantage when it comes to mandatory evacuations? This is what a local resident told me

I imagine the projected hurricane category dictates what areas will and will not be asked to evacuate
