In my area, coyotes are a bigger problem than snakes - lots of pets going missing, etc.

I've seen more snakes here my first year than I've seen all my life living elsewhere. But when it happens, I run one way and the snakes takes off the opposite way so we're good.

HI Jonathan28,
From your later post regarding specifics on brackish water I'd contact the University of Florida in Gainesville NOT to be confused with USF and others. They have many outreach people and working scientists/professors. Google them, there is surely a professor/ dept that can answer for certain. Also there is the fish and game who could answer based on science/experience.

Lastly there is the St. Augestine (spelling, I know) Alligator Zoo/Farm, not sure if they are scientific but they could probably answer information.

That being said, brackish or not, always assume any water has gators, especially if you are thinking of getting a home with a nice water view, with no fence (they will go through a fence if they choose though). The tricky part regarding snakes is there are harmless snakes that look very similar to the real deal, worse they are not afraid of people so you can't throw a stick to get them to run off. Again, UF or Tampa Zoo probably employs biologists that can answer / give advice.

I do think you are crazy for leaving Ohio- I"ve been trying to get people to move there with me for years, but you Buckeyes keep posting those winter pics so they all say no.

Is it common for dogs and or unsuspecting children to be bitten or killed by snakes around there (water moccasins, rattlesnakes). Also how safe is it really to be near or in bodies of water that may have alligators in them. Being up here you always hear when somebody is attacked by a gator. Sorry if this sounds silly, but living up here, we do not have to deal with things like that and I want to be sure it is not a huge problem. Thanks!

Didn't appreciate a message from our HOA manager today telling us about a resident finding a diamondback rattlesnake this past week.....

Hey.... look what the wind blew in? Looks like a Racer. Harmless unless you are a rodent, frog, toad or lizard.
