LOL You guys are complaining about taxes. I live in NY for now. The average price of a home needing about 100k worth of work in my neighborhood is about $750,000. The taxes on a house like that are about 20k per year. We pay school, property, city and county tax. Heating is so expensive most families have to go on an annual plan with the utility company paying almost 330 per month. I am not on a plan and my bill in the winter is close to $600.

Yeah NY is out of control. Almost every building around me has been, or is being converted to "luxury" condos. "Luxury" is a 1500 sf apartment with high end appliances and fixtures.

I just saw this in a magazine about a building close to me:
Quote:
Studios starting at 700 square feet are priced at just under $1 million, and three-bedrooms begin at $2.5 million for 1,950 square feet. Three penthouses with private terraces begin at $3.2 million.
An 800 sf 2 bedroom / 1 bath apartment in Manhattan rents for 4k a month.

Looking for housing in Florida was "fun" compared to shopping 800k studio apartments in Manhattan.

Why do people try and justifyl the mess in Florida with the stupidity of New York, California and all the other overpriced areas? This is Florida, the land of low wages and sunshine. Stop defending the crooks here and become part of the solution!!

Not defending - more like pointing out FL is not the only place being robbed, and, for a transplant, the "robbery" in FL is a "good deal" to some. It's all relative.

Now, if you're signing up recruits to fight the insurance companies, count me in.

I agree. No one is saying soem aspects of Florida are ridiculous. I feel CDD fees and the cost of insurance is ridiculous. As far as a solution goes the Florida legislature should tell insurance companies if you insure life and auto it is mandatory you offer reasonable home insurance.

My prior post I was merely pointing out the reason why I am moving. TO ME, Florida seems much better. My wife would not have to work and my kids would grow up in a good area. Plus, I would be buying a 3500 sq. ft. house which is brand new which I could never do here in NY. Those are major advantages.

No offense, but I don't care what anyone else does. I don't live there. If I did, I'd voice the same complaint.

I don't understand how property values can quadruple and all of a sudden it cost four times as much to run a county. Just because my house went up in value doesn't mean the supervisor of elections (or any other official) needs to hire another assistant. I think everyone would be okay with a modest increase in budget to improve services. But does anyone really think we have gotten four times the services for paying four times the taxes?

Just my two cents.

By the way, there seemed to be an article every day about taxes a couple of months ago, but I have seen anything in at least 6 weeks. Does anyone know if there are any solutions on the way?

Don't know Schilly....but 17 years here in Florida has been enough for me. My real estate taxes have remained reasonable, but my homeowners insurance has quadrupled the last 2 years. I am retired & on a limited income.

I truly love Florida, but it's starting to look like only the rich will be able to afford it....or people from the North East who have sold their overvalued homes & look at Florida like it's the best thing since sliced bread. I guess that statement really 'ages' me, huh?

At the end of the month, I'm moving to the hills & 'hollers' of Kentucky. I will miss some of the great weather here, but not much of anything else.

God Bless.

JOE

I hate the fact that people are displaced due to economic factors. I think there should be some type of protection for long time resident seniors.

As for "only for the rich"...let's use Manhattan to illustrate what's happening since there's a ripple effect. I'll use a recent NY Times article to make my point...

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/23/ny...pagewanted=all

Quote:
The analysis shows that Manhattan’s 35,000 or so white non-Hispanic toddlers are being raised by parents whose median income was $284,208 a year in 2005, which means they are growing up in wealthier households than similar youngsters in any other large county in the country.
Yes...Median income of $280,000 dollars for the families choosing, and able, to stay in the city.

We have a lawyer friend with a wife and young daughter who feels "poor" at 200k a year. Yes they have a "building" at 1.5 million with them on two floors and tenants on the other 2, but they don't even go to the movies because of mortgage expenses and private school costs (30k for a 4 year old). So they would love to leave, but he's tied to his employer, a Wall Street law firm.

The ripple comes when the "poor folk" making a measly 140k a year need to find greener pastures and come grazing in other parts of the country.
