I am an early retiree (55) and unable to obtain individual health insurance due to pre-existing conditions. We had been Planning on relocating to Florida; sadly, I will be unable to obtain health insurance there.

I have learned that TN has a high risk pool, and the premiums are affordable for us. I'd like to hear from anyone who has used this insurance. Any comments, good or bad, would be appreciated.

(I am fully aware of the first phase of the health care reform act that set up PCIP for people like me. I am NOT willing to risk being in that program at this point in time. If the HCRA gets repealed, the PCIP will disappear. Also, you must go without insurance for 6 months to be eligible. Those are not acceptable risks, IMO.)

Are you talking about TNcare? That is the only state insurance I am aware of.

It's AccessTN
Cover Tennessee

I know someone who applied but wasn't able to get premium assistance and couldn't afford the regular premium so was never enrolled. Premiums vary based on age, weight, tobacco use and deductible, it can be expensive for people near retirement. You have to be a TN resident for at least six months, uninsured for at least three months and provide documentation of being uninsurable to qualify. Also enrollment opens and closes based on funding so enrollment being open today is no guarantee of it being open in a couple of months.

It sounds like what was just TNcare. Several years ago a couple I work with had pre existing and that was all that was available to them. There premiums were over $500/month then when TNcare began cuts this couple was cut from the program. I never understood why they kept people that didnt pay a dime for health care, but cut those who were paying high premiums.
On this program they also had to use specific doctors. One was diabetic and had been seeing a specialist. He had to call and get a referral letter at a cost of $30 for every dr. visit to continue seeing his diabetic dr. instead of the general practitioner they told him he would have to go to. Its no wonder these programs are going broke.

Thank you 2mares and yarddawg. This was exactly the information I was hoping to receive. The plan that I was looking at was Cover Tennessee. That is the umbrella program that includes three separate plans: AccessTN, CoverKids and Access RX. You are correct - there is no premium assistance available for this program at this time.

TNcare is the program for TN residents on Medicaid. That does not apply to me.

You both brought up some issues that clearly indicate I need to research this more - and I appreciate your comments and 'warnings.'

Enrollment IS closed. There is no way of determining when or if this will change.
