Hi all,I am considering moving to the Seymour area,My wife and I were in the Maryville,Townsend area and we loved it.We are searching for property and i was looking at land in Seymour and land a little furthur north ,like Maynardville.I need to be pretty close to Knoxville for work and I am also a gigging rock musician.Being from Long Island, NewYork I know we may not be accepted right away but i figure the closer to a city I am the more liberal the people will be.I found the people we met were so very nice and friendly.A new concept for a New Yorker!
Is Seymour a nice area?or should I go north or west of Knoxville.I would like to be close to the Smokies cause I ride a motorcycle and the Smokies have awesome riding roads.

Seymour is a good choice if you need to be close to town and the mountains. It's not the nicest area, but it's not a ghetto and it isn't particularly expensive. My only real complaint about the area is the traffic. Chapman highway gets really bad during rush hour, especially downtown. No matter which way you take in or out of Seymour, you have a good chance of encountering a lot of traffic.

You may be right about finding more liberal folks closer to town. I'm not sure exactly what definition of liberal you're using, but folks who fit ANY of the definitions are a small minority here. I seem to have some unusual opinions (some of them could be construed as liberal) and I've learned to just keep my mouth shut about certain issues around most locals if I'm not in the mood for an argument. When dealing with hillbillies, it helps to keep in mind that regardless of education, intelligence, culture, etc, almost everybody MEANS WELL, for what that's worth.

If peoples' attitudes are a significant concern for you, you probably shouldn't move to Maynardville... unless you're a flag-waving, bible-thumping bushbot. If you are, you'll love it. I've also heard that Maynardville has lousy schools. Even if you don't have kids, I think schools are a good indication of the quality of people you'll find in an area.
