39% Dixie -- definitely a Yankee. However, I didn't find some of the regional assignments of expressions, words or pronunciations to accord with my own experience. Also I've lived more of my life in Texas than anywhere else. Some of these things have to do with education, profession, social class and urban vs. rural identity.

Agreed. I got 46% Dixie and have never lived anywhere near any place that you might consider the south nor do I care to classify myself as southern in any capacity.

In fact, I was kind of disspaointed when it said I was "barely a yankee" but these kind of "tests" also vary according to what the definition of words are at the moment.

For example, I only know about crawfish because of television shows or commercials (from Popeye's) and don't really know them by any other name.

Heh. My friend just took the test and he comes from Lousiana and Memphis stock and HE got 41% Dixie! That means that he is more yankee than me and I wasn't even born in this country!

In Austin - and I had thought throughout Texas - we called it "frontage road". In fact, I do believe that's what the highway signs say when they indicate that there is one (either that or there are roads all over the state named "Frontage").

I was working at a law firm in Austin as a runner (we ran errands, basically), and I was supposed to take a document to another firm. For instructions, I was told to take 35 south, get off the highway, and turn on the frontage road.

I spent about 20 minutes frantically trying to find "Frontage Road."

Service/access road or bust!

I've heard "access road" used as well, but I think frontage became more popular at least around Austin. "Service road" sounds very old fashioned to me somehow, like something I heard years and years ago.

Default As long as we're at it...

Getting ready for the workday to end before long and weekend to begin, so popped in a minute. Anyway, as long as we're taking these "speech tests", here is an "Advanced" version of the one BobTex originally posted. Y'all try this one out:

Are You a Yankee or a Rebel? - alphaDictionary * Advanced Southern Accent Test

I got a 96% Dixie on this one.

Like the other tests, it has its "issues" as well; there are some questions which more than one answer will work, and some where none of the answers really fit. Buy still, fun to take and look at your score.

BTW -- I enjoyed reading the reactions to "feeder road"! LOL (personally, I usually use "service", but "access" works as well.).
