Since 2005 the athletic department has collected and spent about $700M. Good results, eh?
I want everybody to pay close attention to this. Do you see how far aggy has to reach to insult Texas?

Please tell me why you are so happy with Longhorn sports considering the mediocre results on the field, EVERY field of competition, except mens swimming, considering almost 3/4 of a billion dollars collected and spent?

We're happy because nobody in their right mind thinks that A&M has a better athletic department than Texas. Texas spends a lot of money and hasn't racked up a bunch of NC's in the past few years, fair enough. Luckily, though, UT has managed to stay number 5 all-time in NCAA national championships so they're not doing too bad. True, UT has had a couple of down years by their standards. But let's take a look at what a few "down years" for the Texas athletic program looks like.

During what you call Texas's "mediocrity," we've managed to play and win a BCS bowl, play in a BCS national championship game after winning the Big 12, go to the college world series two out of three years and win conference championships, win the Big 12 in Men's basketball and make the tourney all three years, and, as you said, win a NC in swimming.

A&M is sky high right now as they've had unbelievable success (for Texas A&M) the past couple of years in the nonprofit sports. You've nearly doubled your total national championships won as a school by taking home NC trophies in track, women's NCAA basketball, and I think maybe golf. While that's certainly something to be proud of, it doesn't mean you've turned the tide and are overtaking Texas in this state. It means you've had a hot couple of years as an overall athletic program. But let's look at what this whole SEC merger is all about -- football. I mean, Texas A&M have gotten so big for their britches, they can't possibly belittle themselves by staying in the Big 12. So how has Aggie football done lately during your "hot" streak? Well, you've managed to beat Texas for the third time this decade. That's pretty good. What else? Any BCS bowls to show for it? Conference championships? Bowl victories? I'm sorry, I can't hear you over all of the crickets. The last time A&M was competitive in football, the students who go there now were barely in elementary school. Your last bowl victory came in December of 2001 when you played a TCU team who had just lost their coach. You last won the conference when Bill Clinton was trying to figure out what the meaning of the word "is" is. And now you think you're going to go into the SEC, a conference with typically four or five powerhouses, and be competitive when you couldn't do it in a conference with only two or three yearly big time players? Have fun, and don't let the door hit your arrogant butts on the way out.

Funny how the aggies get all excited & superior feeling when Texas has a fluke losing year in football and they rise above their usual mediocrity.

True, they're very competitive in the minor sports, particularly chickball & track. Congrats.
Does the SEC have meat judging and archery?

I think it is revealing that all you guys talk about is football. Yes it makes the money and its what most talk about. But the mark of a really good athletic program is one that wins consistently across the board. Stanford is better than UT or A&M.

I love college football, but I also love Olympic sports. I like (many) women's sports too. If this were pro sports, not college, then the women's sports may not matter. But they matter to me - who will be sending a daughter to college soon, somewhere.

Maybe when Texas gets to $160 million per year, they will suddenly get better. Goestenkors will finally start to win. Maybe all she needs is a raise. Maybe Petrucelli will end his slide. Maybe he needs a raise too. Or Barnes - he surely needs a raise so he he can get past the first round soon. When Eddie Reese, one of the top five swimming coaches in the world, retires, your men's swimming program will probably not improve.

That list can't be right, Scopro, unless Texas has somehow imagined up 114 football championships. Everyone knows that Texas stinks at anything not football.

Jazznblues -- my post talked about not just football, but also basketball, baseball, swimming, track, women's basketball, and golf. And Rick Barnes has gone further in the tourney than any of your roundtable of headcoaches this decade.

Here you go:

Texas National Championships in the last 10 years --

BASEBALL
2002
2005

FOOTBALL
2005

SWIMMING
2001
2002
2010
(3 of Eddie Reese's 10 national championships at Texas came in the last decade)

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
2005
2006

This is fun.

Some interesting info about UT's trends using data in the wiki:

Conference titles:

UT:
- since the Big12 was founded: 114
- last ten years: 72
- last five years: 31

A&M:
- since the Big12 was founded: 55
- last ten years: 47
- last five years: 31

National Championships:

UT:
- since the Big12 was founded: 14
- last ten years: 7
- last five years: 0

A&M:
- since the Big12 was founded: 8
- last ten years: 8
- last five years: 8

ClarenceBodiker - you're right about Rick Barnes compared to A&M's men's basketball. A&M sucked there for a long time. But A&M has come a long way since Gillispie was hired.

Well, if you aggys think that is the case, why are you running off to the SEC where you will be shoved to the middle of the pack or lowwer?

If y'all think you are as good as UT, why are you breaking your word of solidarity & loyalty and running off like a bunch of frightened sheep?

BTW - Most fans don't care about the minor sports & chickball - that's just the way it is.

Could it be that aggy nation is upset because they are no longer considered to be UT's big rival...but on a par with Texas Tech?

The TV deal was just a red herring, and we all know it.
